Why Can't We Attract Players?

Why do the sharks have so much trouble attracting quality players or up and coming superstars to the club? It can't always be the money, we have heaps to spend this year, and last year there was a bit left over. Parra has signed Tahu, Stringer, Robinson, Morrison and Whatuira has gone to the Tigers, just to name a few movements, but the poor sharks have really only signed one name player.
Is it the coaching staff, the board of directors, our recruitment people, or simply no-one really wants to play at the sharks.?????
Has the Chris Anderson cloud and pending legal action holding us back???
I don't think its the fact we concentrate on local juniors because for the first time in years our premier league team contains a heap of ring-ins and really there aren't too many juniors coming through that really stand out.
I think I'de rather be down at Cronulla, than stuck out west at Parramatta!
What do you guys think?????

But SLE being SLE, is this a hint that he also knows we've missed out on some unnamed players we were chasing?

I agree with Sideline Eye.

This year there were some quality players available and we came up with nothing but potential and PL or fringe first graders.

Some of whom there's no need for. Take Covell. Apparently we are prepared to lose Reick to get him BUT he is slow whilst Reick is one of the quickest in the comp and Reick is getting better and better all the time. Covell can kick, though apparently nowhere near as good as he used to before a knee injury, but Hilder is 100% in his last 3 games and Merrit is apparently a very good backup.

IMO opinion we desperatly need a back rower who can really do some damage in attack, and defence if posible.

On the plus side though, with the exception of the Peachey fiasco, retention has been good.

Has to be quality in Management AND that players want over the odds of what they are worth.

I'm not too worried. Using Sharkie history as a guide we generally have somebody pop up from the Juniors in every position except prop. I've always been of the view that unless we desperately need strength in a certain position urgently, a local will come along. E G E T after Sludge. How's Aitken going in PL? He should be just about ready to hatch. Guess I'll get a better idea about that tonight.

Using Sharkie history as a guide we need to change the way we do things if we want to win a comp.

Look at Brisbane, couldn't do it until they bought Lazarus. Kennedy was certainly a big part of Newcastle getting their win.

Selective and astute purchasing of players is crucial, and we can't/don't do it.

Aitken hanst been going to great popper. I think thats because of the style of footy they play which is orientated around the forwards the backs never see the ball so he hasnt really been able to show what he is capable of.
He got a chance and had a run off the bench in firsts against canberra and went great scoring a try. The next week he got the starting halfback job because kimmorley's hammy was gone but couldnt back up his excellent first off performance and looked to be out of his league abit. Raper sent him back to PL the next week.
I still have high hopes for him but they arent gonna eventuate this year.

I dont think we have had problems attracting too many strong juniors as has been suggested. IMO we have a good blend at the moment of local juniors and out of area players too. Our junior ranks are full of talent which just has to be developed properly.

I guess there is abit of concern in that we havent attracted any high profile players but it seems after resigning our priority players we seem to be only looking to fill a few positions (ie outside back) where there is not many players aviable anyway.

Vince Mellars is our biggest signing for this year.

We won't have to wait till next year though on whether we,ve found a diamond in the rough or just another shiney stone.

With a debut in Premier League tonight I'm sure we will find out alot more on the type of player we have recruited.

And whether we should be worried or confident for next year..............

Tahu
Whatuira
Cross
Hegarty
Monaghan

There's 5 quality first grade or rep class outside backs that were available this year off the top of my head. 3 of those at least are heading to new clubs.

Alot of those had gone after shoring up our own talent first. I am probably wrong but the club seems to me to have wanted to resign our priorities first before going looking for any quality first graders.
By the time they had done this most of the quality players are gone. There isnt much left now.

P.J, sure those players mentioned are great players BUT...........

Tahu, has gone to the Eels ina deal around $400,000

Whatuira, (Who I don't rate) has been signed for around $200,000

Cross, resigned with the Roosters. (Do u think we'd out bid the Roosters for a player they wanted to keep?

Hegarty, signed with Souths. He was probably the only realistic player we could of got. (However I don't know how much the Rabbits paid up)

Monogahn, Well good luck do your best trying to compete with Manly and the Roosters and a determined Canberra to keep a home grown jewel.

We've signed Mellars, a 20 year old with plenty of size and decent pace and utility value for the forwards. Let's see what he is like before we bag off at him.

I believe the Roosters were happy to let Hegarty go due to a recent bad habit that he got internally caught for. Appears his ankle wasn't that bad!

The title of the thread is why can't we attract players.

If the answer is we can't afford them, fine.

I also think that unless we can breed them we need to buy in a genuine game breaker to go with Noddy if we ever want to win a comp.

Whilst I do see the merit in some of this, seems to me in the last few years we have signed some top players. This year alot of the young talent needed re-signing, and we did re-sign many.
We are always signing players, how many are locals?
We usually have a kiwi, a qlder etc, like most sides.
In short just last year we signed Vagana who at the time was considered the best centre going around. Kimmorley few years before that, and Stevens was hot property we got him.
We go OK.
The man we should have thrown all the cash at is Lockyer. We have as much chance as anyone else to lure him away for the broncos, about 3% chance.
