It’s funny, for years I’d be fizzing with that news, but currently a bit meh, he seems to have lost all his spark and looks listless in attack at the moment. Maybe the opportunity could revitalise him though

Media hype/attention along with putting a few more thousands on the gate at kiwi home internationals alone would be well worth it.

im sure he’ll rediscover his spark and form especially with a potential fresh new challenge

ah, I was under the impression that the 9s didn't count, but have done a little more reading and it appears that according to the rules they do count - it's just that Brimson was successful in applying for a dispensation.

Obviously there's now a clear precedent there for Ponga, but yeah technically as it stands he can't play for NZ. I don't think that's been made particularly clear in the reporting.

The reporting's been full of holes on this story since the start, even before Brimson set the precedent. The IRL have long listed the 9s as a qualifying format in their eligibility rules but over-excited journos kept ignoring/overlooking in their rush to get headlines out.

The other one I keep hearing is "but what's he going to do about the fact he played for Queensland", as if the IRL give a f**k about who you play for in a domestic Australian series. I just think international league is so integrated into/swamped by NRL and Origin that people have a hard time conceptualising it as a separate thing with its own rules.
