With Marsh leaving and possibly Riddell this year did we make the right call? What do you think? I don't want to sound cold but there are plenty of players I would have let go before PJ.Then Eels fans saw PJ Marsh, in the prime of his career, head off to Brisbane this year when he had a year left on his contract. Eels coach Michael Hagan will admit it straight out.
Had the club not released Marsh they would have broken the cap this year after large bonuses were paid to Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu after their international selections, plus other cap issues.
"PJ wanted to extend his deal which we weren't prepared to do and wanted to be a starting player which we couldn't assure him,'' Hagan said. "We were going to be over the salary cap this year if we didn't shed someone.
"So we let him look around and he came up with a good deal for himself - everybody was happy. You have to make those judgment calls all the time.''
