Why PJ Marsh had to leave

Then Eels fans saw PJ Marsh, in the prime of his career, head off to Brisbane this year when he had a year left on his contract. Eels coach Michael Hagan will admit it straight out.
Had the club not released Marsh they would have broken the cap this year after large bonuses were paid to Jarryd Hayne and Krisnan Inu after their international selections, plus other cap issues.
"PJ wanted to extend his deal which we weren't prepared to do and wanted to be a starting player which we couldn't assure him,'' Hagan said. "We were going to be over the salary cap this year if we didn't shed someone.
"So we let him look around and he came up with a good deal for himself - everybody was happy. You have to make those judgment calls all the time.''
With Marsh leaving and possibly Riddell this year did we make the right call? What do you think? I don't want to sound cold but there are plenty of players I would have let go before PJ.

it doesn't matter who we'd prefer to let go - only guys who are looking elsewhere and getting offers can be let go

I don't think it matters tbh.. we've got a wonderful young hooker in Matt Keating who is a long-term option

Would like to know how much we would have busted the cap by.
Other teams do it and only get fines so maybe we should have just kept him and payed a fine.

Can't keep everyone on big money, personally I would rather lock up Matt Keating and Anthony Mitchell for the long term than worry about Pig and PJ. With Kris signing on for 2 more years it is just more credit to Fitzy for keeping these kids together. They are the future. Sign Albert up long term and I will be even happier.

Well that's lovely and all but you know the whole lack of passion we've seen from the side in the first seven weeks?

You would never have been able to accuse PJ of that ...

But wait , there's more.

The article in todays Telecrap states that we would have been over the cap and in a little trouble upgrading etc because of clauses in contracts. We have had several comments suggesting that our previous negotiating guru didn't make mistakes, well I imagine he was responsible for a lot of that trouble.

Food for thought and a stirring of the pot, we should let our current staff get on with the job as not everything from the past was infallible,

Comparing Matt Keating to PJ is just ridiculous.

Agreed...

And as much as I loved having PJ at the club (the second time around) he does have an injury question mark over him with his neck, and doesn't exactly look after himself in the game (just ask Scott Logan)...

I prefer PJ to Riddell, but PJ does have the history above, and Riddell, at a pinch, could go back to goal-kicking...

Matt Keating is still learning how to play first grade...

keep in mind PJ has hardly played this year through injury .... i know its all different now being off elsewhere and all - but he's not doing any team much good atm

Parramatta made the right move here, we had to offload him, however Riddell probably would've been my first option though......
