Master tactician, reassuring phone caller, half-time blaster, wedding guest - Melbourne coach Craig Bellamy has been many things to his players but they all agree he's the key to the Storm's consistent success.

Minor premiers Melbourne are contesting their 14th NRL finals campaign in the 15 years Bellamy has been at the club - the only exception being the 2010 season when they were stripped of competition points for salary cap cheating.

While many credit superstars Cameron Smith, Cooper Cronk and Billy Slater as the backbone of that unparalleled run, Storm players say it couldn't have happened without Bellamy.

In Friday night's preliminary final against Brisbane, Bellamy will coach his 393rd NRL game, drawing level with the great Jack Gibson at seventh on the all-time list.

He has the best strike-rate of the current crop of NRL coaches, with 267 wins at 67.6 per cent, with the Roosters' Trent Robinson next best at 62.3 per cent from 130 games.

To his players, however, there are many, often more personal, reasons why they rate him the best.

"He's a huge part of this club - I don't know if the club would be where it is without him," says forward Tim Glasby.

"He puts in so much work and time and the players all respect him and love being coached by him.

"He drives a hard work ethic here and it's a tough gig sometimes but you do what he tells you because you know it's best for the team."

Glasby played under-20s for Penrith but failed to win an NRL contract and returned home in 2010 to play three seasons in the Queensland Cup.

Seven years later he is a Queensland State of Origin player.

"I probably owe everything to Craig as he's the one who gave me my debut," the 28-year-old said.

"He's given me a lot of pointers and critique and he's done a lot for my game over the years and is certainly a big part of my career."

Fellow prop Jesse Bromwich said that Bellamy's support when he was involved in a drugs scandal while on Test duty in May helped him through a tough time in which he lost the Kiwis captaincy and was banished for the World Cup.

"He'd call me and make sure I was alright and pull me into his office and he'd ring my partner to make sure she was fine," Bromwich said.

"It goes to show what type of fella he is and I just feel very lucky to be a part of this club and he's a big part of that."

Centre Will Chambers joined the Storm in 2007 but switched to rugby union in 2010 for two years. Even then, Bellamy didn't turn his back on the player.

"I still spoke to Craig at different times when I struggled playing rugby union," said Chambers, who had Bellamy as a guest at his 2015 wedding.

"He's been a part of my life for a long time on and off the field and I thank him for everything that's come out of my footy career because he's taken me to levels I never thought I could get to."

Chambers, who moved from the Northern Territory to Brisbane as a teenager before Melbourne, likened Bellamy to a father figure.

"He pushes you and drives you to be a better person and a better footballer but being a better person is the most important thing to him and that's the special thing about him and what he does," he said.

The players say Bellamy, who is signed for 2018, continues to be at the top of his game because of a never-ending thirst for knowledge and improvement.

At the end of each season he heads overseas to successful sporting organisations such as the All Blacks and top NFL and NBA teams to try to gain a winning edge.

"The best thing about his coaching style is that he's not a closed book," Bromwich said.

"The leadership group are constantly throwing new ideas at him and he's open to trying new things and that's why he's always been so successful.

"He's open to changing things although the main thing is that he just works so hard."

The reason the players like bellamy/storm is because all the players know they have the best team of players in the nrl rolled up in one team its not bellamy at all, its the individual players from 1-17 not bellamy....without this roster bellamy would be nothing id love to see bellamy coach the knights for the past few years he would not do that whilst coaching a team thats way over the cap and get away with it he is a fraudster like bennett he just has the cattle fact just like souths had the cattle in 2014 and since our star cattle has left we are shiiit . CROWE/RICHO/MANAGEMENT LET SOUTHS DOWN . IT AINT ROCKET SCIENCE LOOK AT US NOW WE JUST LET 6 DUDS GO WHY BUY THEM IN THE 1ST PLACE?? DUMBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBBB

dont you think that if hasler or madge had bellamy"s team this year they would accomplish being in the top 4?? of course they would so would newcastles coach bellamy has the best team on paper by a country mile how can he not succeed he is sitting in the gravy seat where all the other coaches would love to be today F A C T...!!!

Hopefully your board is not as dumb as you.

If you can't see the value of Bellamy there's no hope for you.

Food for thought

id suggest that their are many nrl coaches coaching a dud team for many many years therefore the cattle let them down continuously ie/newcastle/souths of old/etc etc.../...its fairly obvious that the storm/broncs wont miss the 8 next year and basically will make the 8 for many more years to come....i know you cant understand logic.....its the cattle not bellamy.....why is bellamy so great .....answer is/because he has the cattle there you go i hope this helps you...Shadow...

the nrl will make sure that the storm wont fail after all they put them there to succeed and upset the afl game down there....ask yourself why dont the storm have a poor team.....simple nrl wont let it happen therefore when the storm win next week it will only annoy the afl teams and sponsors etc....the nrl will always have a stacked side in melb its called business similar to the broncs and cows...its all about the dollars nothing else so the members/fans/sponsors just follow the game like sheep with rose colored glasses on ......Shadow...

Since you almost made a coherent point I'll address it properly.

The difference between Bellamy and other coaches is that he gets the best out of talent.

Anyone who makes it to NRL level is talented. A great coach turns that talent into a great player.

If cronk, slater and smith aren't proof enough, have a look at what happened to Adam Blair when he left, or better yet, Dane neilsen.

QUESTION: What would had happened if the storm had not won a final in 43 years like souths did??

ANSWER: I would doubt that this club would exist today if this was the case but in saying that even blind freddy knows that the nrl will let them have an over the salary cap team in melb to keep winning / surviving and to keep an nrl team down there in the heart of afl territory ....S h a d o w...

Re Bellamy. There is one variable often ignored in all such banter. That my friend is the topic of CHEMICAL WEAPONS. I ask this Question: how can OLD PLAYERS actually IMPROVE over time and suffer Minimal Injuries as they age despite being pounded by younger bodies?? How does this happen?? Its not only Smith Slater and Cronk but how about old Man River... NFL QB Tom Brady at nearly 41 is still a dominant player and never injured despite getting crunched regularly!!! Seeing this man continually get up after suffering vicious hits is staggering given his age. When Lance Armstrong rumours first surfaced, Greg LeMond [3x TDF Winner in the pre - EPO era] stated that modern day doping cocktails can quote "turn a donkey into a racehorse." Is what we actually see from such OLD and REJECT football players reality or some type of fraud that has never been exposed??? Armstrong confessed that all his US Postal team riders were strongly advised to take the power cocktails or face the sack. Personally I do not buy old players and rejects failing to fall apart given the body contact/violence they face every weekend in season.

I very much dislike this theory. It would destroy the game for me if I found out these athletes were on substances. I love NRL because it is one of the most athletic/toughest sports in the world. It is one of the most team oriented games I've ever played as well.
