Brian Smith wanted him to play a regimented game
So Dykes, a brilliant, instinctive, free spirited player tried to play to Brian Smith's strange system

Of course it was never going to work
After a couple of years of that idiot Smith making him play the way he wanted to, Dykes was scapegoated after a few consecutive losses as the reason for the team's failure and Smith announced in the press that he wanted Dykes to completely overhaul his game

Not surprisingly - not long after, the move to Cronulla was on and Parramatta's potentially best player was gone and he will win Dally M 5/8 of the year this year and make Brian Smith look like the no hoper coach that the league world knows he is.

two words Brian Smith

Not just dykes, there is a list of players, eg Michael Witt looks different player at Manly, Hasler lets him some power.

Alex Chan going great guns at Melbourne

Clinto Schifoske nearly best canberra player

the list goes on and on, and why because Smith gives players instructions, and they are to be followed to letter, not to change at all, and players all listed are ones who think for themselves

But know one can coach a side to lose a grand final like Brian Smith! (Dragons 92/93 Parra 2001) Guess it's nice to be number one at something eh Brian?

i also believe it has to do with the fact he is a five eighth...NOT a halfback as Smith wanted to use him. And when he was playing 5/8th at parra, he never had any decent half backs to work with.......unlike now!!

Going by Parra's form I think he must have been having a hell of an impact at Parra.
