Why we MUST re-sign Hopkins

We desperately need an interhcnage hooker for next year.

I honestly can't see John Morris being rotated between 5/8 & Hooker during the course of a match. The idea is laughable. If Smith wants him to be 5/8 next year then he needs to be an 80 min 5/8. He needs to focus all his energies and attention on becoming a top 5/8 and developing/sharpening the skills required to do so. He needs to work hard in the offseason on his kicking and passing game and he should only be focusing on dominating in one position, and one position only, 5/8.

Lee Hopkins must be our interchange hooker, rotating with Riddell. Lee is a complete clubman and he loves the Parramatta club to death. To cut him loose now would be a real shame. We really don't have many hooking options at the club and Hopkins played very well in the position when called upon last year. Consider him a poor man's Riddell. I remember he had a blinder for us at hooker in a home game against the Warriors last year, a game which we won in the dying seconds. Lee was a big reason we won that game scoring a try and setting up another. I really like this bloke, he's all heart.

I just don't see any better options on the open market as far as interchange hookers are concerned. Especially when you consider that Lee would be the sort of bloke who would stay with the club for little money. How many other players will you pick up that give you their heart and soul week in week out and are willing to give it their all for the Parramatta jersey? His form is just starting to come good again after sitting out alot of the early part of the year with a fractured cheekbone.

I realy hope we re-sign him.

Agreed. I read an article about a month ago that said we had an option on his services. Not sure though.

Lee was veyr close to our players player last season and tries his heart out every week.

I'd be disappointed if we bought someone else for that role, over the top of Lee.

Once we find out officially what's happening with Dykes, (hopefully) it will become clear our first choice halves will be Morris & Witt. With Riddell as first choice hooker, you're going to have to bring someone off the bench. We could instead turn someone into that type of player, who better than Lee (who along with Webster kind of did that when Morris was 5-8 for that stretch last year)?

But looking at all the recruitment, I'm sure we can't keep everyone off contract. Stapleton, Hopkins, Langi have served in firsts the most this year, and you'd think would be the remaining priorities. (Assuming Pearson and Peek are retiring.) And maybe keep one of Webster, Thorman and Muspratt too, I don't know....

I think the club may wait to make a decision, telling players they have to earn a new contract in the coming weeks.

As much as I like Stapleton, I think Hopkins is actually more crucial. We just don't have an interchange hooker at the club that is capable of playing first grade week in week out. Webster isn't up to it, he's to small and a liability in the defensive line. Hopkins has the size and build of a good solid hooker and he can play.

We have Cayless, Stringer, Cannings, Vella, Tsoulos & Armit as far as Front Rowers are concerned. Do we really need Stapleton?

How many interchange/back-up hookers do we have?

I'd love to re-sign both but Hopkins is a must. I'd consider Stapleton a bonus.

I think O'Dwyer could make a good hooker. Plus he can play lock or in the backs.

He is tough and also have some ball skills

We should not make the decisoon based upon how cheap the guy is, or how nice he is. He played his first real game on Saturday for season 2004. For mine, we have Webster or Thorman - both better ball players -for that role.

Hopkins has been a dissapointmentg IMHO. Lose him.

Hopkins has not impressed unfortunately. He has not regained the form he had last year. He has been back from injury long enough now to show us what he is capable of.

I'm sorry we're not the Roosters so can't keep everyone on the roster. Its a shame but we have to let some go.

As discussed O'Dwyer would be great to cover at hooker. Could really become a utility player whom could run in the backs, halves, lock or hooker. Great player whom shows lots of ticker above and beyond his size. I put him in the Sean Berrigan mould.

i have made this point about Hopkins before.......

retain Hopkins, Langi and Stapleton in that order out of the players still off-contract and lose the rest

I dont think keeping langi would be wise. With dave and tahu our centre pairing and b.smith langi would only get a run through injury. I think now hopkins would be a good resign bugt is there enough space under the cap.

I think it depends on our salary cap situation. After buying 4 high profile players we are probably is a position to offers the others next to nil, which is a shame. I wouldn't mind seeing Morris changed to hooker next year and playing someone like Dykes or Smith off the bench.

I wouldn't mind seeing Thorman used in that role, infact I suggested it a while back, but i'm not too sure if Thorman is even staying with the club and/or would be happy playing hooker off the bench?

Webster is just too small. He gets targetted in the defensive line all the time and I'm just not convinced that he's the answer.

Muspratt is another option and he has been playing hooker most of the year in Premier League despite coming to the club as a lock/five-eighth.

It's no coincidence that all 4 players are currently off contract for next year;

- Hopkins
- Thorman
- Webster
- Muspratt

Only one of them (if any) is likely to be re-signed to fill the role.

I like Lee but I think the interchange hooker needs to be a hooker first and foremost. After all, if they are going to interchange with Riddell their likley to spend 30 minutes at dummy half.

I actually agree with Misty Bee, I think hooker could be Thorman's position. He's relatively nippy, nice pass, strong. I think you need someone who contrasts with Riddell, not a similiar role or you just lose impact when he goes off. St George is working very well with Lincoln Withers and I agree that Thorman could do the same for us.

Thorman is a very big risk. He played in hooker one game and he was shocking. I like Riddell starting with an impact coming off the bench. But Thormans game just doesnt impress me. He played so well in Premmies the other week and then he was brought into 1st's and was really dissapointing. A bit like Parra's season hot and cold.

Why do people keep saying Morris at 5/8?

He DOES NOT want to play there - he wants to play hooker.

I think we need him for 80 minutes, and, although I'm stoked we signed Riddell, I can't for the life of me imagine wh we did sign him and jeopardise Morris' position and happiness with the club.

If he agrees to play 5/8 - fine.

But from what I understand, he is not a happy pappy with Riddell's inclusion.

So while everyone was getting excited about signing Riddell, the $$$$$$$ that we paid him means that we have to let decent players go.

Here's hoping that we have made the right decision... :?
