We knock V`landy`s for increasing the salary cap probably at the expense of ploughing money into development (amongst other probable worthy causes)
The proposed cap increase isn’t as big as some previous ones when new tv deals kicked in and CBA’s agreed

2007 cap was $4mill
2013 cap was $5.1mill 26% increase
2018 $9.1mill ($4mill increase on previous cba) top 30 players 80% increase
2023 proposed $12.1mill ($3mill increase on previous cba) top 36 players 33%

now obviously the cap does often get increased during the period of the cba dependant on revenue performance of nrl.

That's incredible. Games killing it.

The reality is SL doesn’t have the tv companies willing to throw silly money at it, and the nrl doesn’t have a behemoth like epl To contend with in nsw and qlnd. The gap in revenue of the two comps is insurmountable now.

does that mean SL is a poor cousin or second rate? Well yes and no Depending on how you look at it.
If we look at soccer, I dont suppose soccer leagues in other countries consider themselves second rate because they don’t have the same revenue as epl and their stars move there. the fans don’t care, they still flock to their local teams.
SL needs to stop worrying about the nrl and the odd player that may try their luck over here and concentrate on itself and building better development pathways (it’s ludicrous that not all SL clubs run academies and reserve grade sides) and look to keep building its own brand.

I think there's a case that SL should lower the cap for more sustainable growth. Lower the cap and increase the teams to 14.

That could work but the powerful and richer clubs dont want that as a cap that not everyone can meet gives them better opportunity to sign the best players.

In many ways diverting some of the 1st team cap to academies and reserve grade would probably bring better outcomes than lowering it to add two more mouths at an already shallow food bowl.

Nrl clubs should go for more younger players

there are players in super league earning 20 k pounds a year

even our minimum wage is good for them plus they are improving their skills and living in Australia

super league would be on par with reserve grade

st Helen’s would probably struggle to make the top 8

we could easily get 40 decent players from super league which would improve swuad depth immensely

Yes, the cap difference is so great now that it is financially worthwhile an English player moving comps. Also the more success you see in English players in the NRL the more NRL clubs will scout in England. I'm dreading when clubs come sniffing around our superstar halfback in the making. Sadly for my club and its fans its probably only a matter of time.
I think the NRL scouting the best Young English talent is a better outcome for RL as a whole as it may fend off the Union scouts. What are your thoughts?

It’ll boost the international game but the impact on the domestic game could be very damaging.

having said that I just read that Chelsea fc have spent more on players this year than the top 4 european competitions put together! Those comps are still flourishing so maybe it won’t be as bad as feared.
looks like union is becoming less and less a threat given their financial predicament.

It is crazy most Australia clubs are worried about Tonga with population the size of Port Macquarie than trying to eat the Yorkshire/Cumbria/Lancashire player base which equivalent to NSW/ACT depth.

Cumbria has no representation and alot of players.

BUT the other side is if this happens then Super league will be gutted to just metro cup style comp.

Yes and no really.

No doubt super league would be weaker in the short-term with the loss of its best players but a potential upside of this would be that super league clubs would have to seriously start investing and even thinking outside of the box for unearthing and developing young british RL talent in new areas both within the “heartlands“ of Lancashire, Yorkshire and Cumbria but also expansion areas within the “heartlands“ and next door to the “heartlands“ like Manchester, Liverpool, Sheffield and Newcastle etc as well as south wales, Birmingham and obviously London.

All this is dependent on super league clubs actually thinking long-term and not season to season unfortunately.

Yes but there is problem. So many super league clubs are very struggling to keep afloat financially also not that much support on the whole.

Again yes and no really.

clubs can work with local government and sport England in order to get help with costs.

Also a lot of clubs are doing well crowd wise and newly promoted Leigh for example are expecting a full house for the visit of St Helens which should be around 10-11k which is fantastic for RL in England.

As long as the English clubs get a transfer fee I think it works quite well for them. Welsby or someone could be $250k vs nothing. That 250k will then go to more young players and they see a pathway to millions in the nrl. So I think it’s Ok overall.
