William Hopoate to sign with Parramatta Eels

WILLIAM Hopoate is set to return from his two-year Mormon mission an Eel after agreeing to terms with Parramatta in the lead-up to the grand final.

The Daily Telegraph can reveal Eels coach Stephen Kearney and recruitment boss Peter Nolan have convinced Hopoate to commit to a two-year deal, which will begin when he finishes the Queensland-based religious mission in 2014.

Negotiations have been kept under close guard but several Manly officials and players were privately discussing William Hopoate's decision in the winning dressing room on Sunday night.

The Sea Eagles had been desperately attempting to ensure Hopoate returned to Brookvale, but it's believed Parramatta's offer was too lucrative for the 19-year-old to refuse. Sources close to the negotiations last night said the Eels contract was worth upwards of $500,000-a-season and could possibly see Hopoate's father, John, offered a job on Parramatta's coaching staff.

Hopoate's manager, Tyrone Smith, was unavailable for comment last night while Eels CEO Paul Osborne and Manly counterpart David Perry could not be contacted. Along with cashed-up Canterbury, Parramatta had been a leading contender to pluck Hopoate from the Sea Eagles' nest before his decision to put faith over football midway through the season.

But while the Bulldogs dropped off, the Eels kept talking to the NSW Origin flanker in the hope of getting him to continue what shapes as a stunning career in blue and gold.

The only doubt is whether Hopoate's time away from football will stunt his rugby league development.

Hopoate said on Sunday night that he planned to keep fit during the sabbatical.

"I'm going to have to be self-motivated to train and keep fit," he said. "I don't want to come back as a prop."

"Hopefully they give me a training schedule to keep me in shape and I will stay in touch and let them know how I am going."

The teenager also threw a dummy yesterday, saying he planned to return to Manly in 2014. "Definitely. It is the club I love," he said. "Manly is the club I grew up supporting.

"I would love to stay in the maroon and white. In saying that I just want to soak up the win and enjoy the week with the boys."

But well-placed sources at both clubs yesterday confirmed Parramatta had won out, capping an impressive recruitment drive that's already netted Chris Sandow, Willie Tonga and Ben Roberts. The Eels are still seeking to create more room in their salary cap by releasing several contracted players, including five-eighth Daniel Mortimer.

Manly will receive some consolation when star forward trio George Rose, Brent Kite and Tony Williams announce contract extensions soon.

So there you go. One state of origin rep served up fresh after the grand final. Shame about the two year wait.

He's one of the hottest talents in the NRL and we have signed him. Have a good feeling the club is going in the right direction. He'll still be 21 when he comes back from the mormon mission

nice marquee to lock up for the future. low risk in that, he's a good kid and there will be plenty of clear-outs before then

And by 2014 the salary cap will be a lot bigger. Most clubs will have 3 or 4 players on more than half a million dollars.

The most beautiful thing is we finally got one back on f**king Manly.

I wonder if it is the full package deal (John, William and Jamil) as by all accounts the youngest Hopoate is a fair talent as well.

Didn't expect that! Good signing, assuming his heart will still be in a league career after he gets back from mission.

Not too keen on the possibility of John Hoppa getting a role on our coaching staff... hopefully that's just paper talk.

from the other site, talking about Jamil

"I was told today by a Harold Matts Manly player that plays with my nephew that Will Hopoate's younger brother has also signed with Parra. From memory there was an article in the Daily Telegraph about 8 weeks ago talking about him and his brothers. I can't remember his first name but he made the NSW state u18 team this season in his first year and he is eligible to play 18's (17yrs old) again this year. He is a secondrower/lock with good size. From what I have heard he is better then what Will was at the same age. To make the NSW SG Ball State Team when you are a year under the rest of the team is pretty impressive.

It seems to make sense that Will Hopoate has signed when his younger brother is rumoured to have sized. A package deal. "

Who cares how good he'll be? This is all about raising the club's profile and paying Manly back for 40 years of poaching other clubs' players.

Whilst all you Parramatta Eels fans are hopeful this story is true. The story gets shaky when things like the following are said.

Hopoate's manager, Tyrone Smith, was unavailable for comment last night while Eels CEO Paul Osborne and Manly counterpart David Perry could not be contacted.

However, this will be a lead story for the next few days on most news outlets sports bulletins. Until the Parramatta Eels and/or Manly clubs release a statement, I'd take this story with a gain of salt. The integrity of the Daily Telegraph has slipped too low as of late.

Despite all that, I am not bashing on the Eels for the possible signing. But don't believe everything you read at face value. 2014 is a while away and the game changes. Hopoate might not want to come back after his mission.

Thats OK because you have Inglis and he's currently in the game and still struggles.

William is only 19

Hopoate coup: Eels win race to sign Manly star on return

WILLIAM HOPOATE has played his final game for Manly, with the Herald learning the boom teenager has agreed to turn out for Parramatta when he returns to the NRL from his two-year Mormon missionary work in Brisbane.

Hopoate, 19, had an outstanding match in the Sea Eagles' grand final victory over the Warriors on Sunday after spending three hours at church before the game.

A host of clubs, including Canterbury, the Sydney Roosters and the Warriors, had joined Manly in trying to negotiate a deal with Hopoate's manager, Tyran Smith, of Sportsplayer Management, to tie him down to a long-term deal while Hopoate completed his religious duties.

The Herald's source, who is close to both Hopoate and the Eels, said Parramatta had worked overtime to ensure they signed the eldest son of former Test winger John Hopoate, who also won a grand final with Manly, in 1996.

The young star had thought long and hard about his decision, the source said.

Smith, who could not be contacted, was quoted in The Sun-Herald last May as saying a number of clubs had shown a massive amount of interest in his client because they realised he had the personality and characteristics around which to build a strong culture.

''I think the fact he's so popular and humble appeals to the chief executives because they're things a club can build a culture around," Smith, a former first grader, said at the time.

And he can play - Hopoate's grand final effort against New Zealand belied the fact he had played just 22 first grade games. He made close to 200 metres, produced a magic flick pass for Glenn Stewart to score and came within millimetres of scoring a sensational try himself. His defence and coolness in defusing bombs were tremendous.

It is not known if Hopoate, who represented NSW in State of Origin this season, has informed his teammates of what was described as a "tough" decision.

The news will hearten Parramatta supporters, whose 2014 roster will boast Hopoate, Chris Sandow and Jarryd Hayne - three of the NRL's most electrifying players.
