League player in court over attack

A feud between two rugby league players has left one with a fractured cheekbone and the other in jail on assault charges.

Cronulla Sharks first grader Jason Williams faced Parramatta bail court yesterday over a brutal attack on teammate Jeremy Smith.

He was charged with one count of maliciously inflicting grievous bodily harm in company and one count of common assault.

Registrar Brian Fenn refused bail due to "the general welfare and protection of both the victim and the community".

Williams, 23 - an off-season buy from the Bulldogs - has been tagged the strongest man at the Sharks.

The 115-kilogram second rower/prop from New Zealand made his first-grade debut this season and had so far played six first-grade games for the Sharks. Smith plays for the Sharks' Premier League side.

Sharks chief executive Steve Rogers said Williams is facing the sack from the club after facing court.

"We put him on notice that he would go if there were any further incidents with Jeremy," Rogers said yesterday.

Rogers said that Smith would likely be unable to play for the rest of the season.

The court was told the feud has been going since January and they had come to blows on two previous occasions.

Police allege Williams and an acquaintance bashed Smith unconscious at Carmen's Nightclub in Miranda.

Documents tendered in court revealed the Sharks have had to ban Williams from playing in games twice after incidents involving the pair.

On a bus trip on February 7, police documents allege team-mates had to pull Williams off Smith after he punched him. It is also alleged Williams hit his teammate high and late in a tackle at training.

Smith, who told police he had little recollection of the attack, went to Sutherland Hospital with a fractured cheekbone and swelling to his head. He had surgery on his cheek the following day at the Prince of Wales Hospital, Randwick.

The accused attended Miranda police station of his own accord on Thursday. He allegedly admitted to being present during the incident but denied taking part, claiming he attempted to separate Smith and another man during what he described as "a fair fight".

He was called back to the station the following day and arrested. He will reappear at Sutherland Local Court tomorrow.

That's a real real shame.

I'm pretty damned disappointed actually. We need a bloke like Williams out on the field for us, not in the bloody lock-up.

After this it looks like his Career is over before it even begun.

Warriors will have a good player but a fuggin lunatic on their hands.
good to be rid of him.

F*ck that. The bloke tried his guts out for Cronulla when no-one else was.

I'm devastated we've lost him, particularly if its to a club like the Warriors where guys like him are in abundance.

I really hope things can be worked out, but I don't like his chances.

I say we keep him. Yes he's a thug. But we need thugs. If he doesn't end up in jail he should be back playing.

Yeah its a shame, it would have been good to see him reach his potential with the sharks. I have heard Smith baited him abit so i dont think he is totally innocent either but Williams actions are rightfully not being tolerated by the club. I wonder if the club will take any action against Smith....

The bigger picture is far more important.
Williams is a fruitcake.
A very powerful man, who cannot control himself.
I wasn't joking months ago when I said I walkedpast him & said I was glad he didn't kill me.
How would we feel if something that serious ever happened by a shark.

Because he bashed a smart-arse who (by the sounds of it) was asking for it? Tell me you've never had the urge to belt the hell out of someone being a smartarse to you.

Smith was playing with Matches and was horribly burnt. No-one deserves to have their head-kicked in like he did, but there are always, ALWAYS 2 sides to a story, and I cannot see Williams simply approaching Smith and then belting the absolute f*ck out of him.

I can't believe some of you are supporting an assault under any conditions. It's another Hoppa waiting to happen to say he has an excuse each time.
IF his story is true then he shouldn't be sacked but if the charges are true then he isn't the type of person we want in the game.

I know this isn't good but I guess we can talk about it now. A deadset shame considering the blokes potential but we don't need that sort of crap at our club. For all those that haven't worked it out, this is the bloke Pogo was talking about way back when.

I wonder what Nige is thinking. Didn't he reccommend him to the club and wasnt he meant to be a street kid convert or something?

F**K that sucks, Williams was awsome, they should be getting rid of that Jeremy Smith bloke, he sounds like a pussy for dobbing Williams in anyway. I knew that having a bloke like WIlliams at the club was too good to be true
