Willie Mason has come out and denied any allegations that he was the Bulldogs player who tested positive for cocaine last year in an internal drug test conducted by the Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs.

bulldogs should start taking defamation action if this is true..... newspapers are damaging rugby leagues name for a quick buck and it's not fair to fans.....
i demand the rugby league supporters associtation and rugby league fans to protest against the newspapers on their blasphemy towards league. the fact that the newspapers failed to name their (senior rugby league sources) smells of conspiracy.

You would think that the Telegraph and SMH checked with their legal advisors before taking the huge step of naming the player. If they are wrong they are in BIG trouble.

Maybe their legal advise was a $1M profit from the sale of newspapers versus a $300K out of court defamation settlement.

Mason has just made even more of a fool of himself.

C'mon Bulldogs...regain some of that famous pride - tear up some contracts and clean up your act.

I think the only sensible thing that can be done in this situation is for the Bulldogs to come out and name the player who tested positive. If Mason is guilty then he should own up otherwise he is just making a fool of himself, if he is innocent though then the guilty person should step forward instead of letting him cop the blame. The only way to clear this up in this case is by naming names.

The Bulldogs aren't allowed to name names. They're bound by their workplace agreement. If Willy didn't do it, he could sue the papers for everything they had.

If he had any shred of decency, he'd own up.

Basically all Willie did was say he wasn't the player. He hasn't cleared his name of anything. As the club is not allowed to name him if he did do it anyway we should see a case of defamation brought against the papers for naming him if what he says is true. If not he should stop making himself look like an even bigger idiot and own up.

Well, seeing as the truth will legally never come out. It looks as that caseof defermation should be a sure thing.

If its taken to court the club *could* be subpoenaed to give evidence. Whether Mason did or did not take the drugs *maybe the only thing that can confirm if he did or did not take the drugs is the* club's testing results - they may never be made public however they can be used in a court of law.

Im not too clear on the law, but wouldn't the agreement to keep everything private make any evidence inadmissible?

My understanding is that if Mason was to sue the papers for defamation then the papers would have to prove that he did use the cocaine like they said. They need to provide evidence that shows he did - if the evidence they have proves that he did in fact take the drugs then the club may be called on to clarify with their results.

They can supena that evidence and have it tabled in court. Then all the court does is issue a suppresion order so the papers can't print it ;-)
