Wingers - the underrated position

Wingers are players not good enough to play centre.
As an example of that Israel would play centre in a weaker team, eg. may play centre for Broncos, but will be a winger for QLD as they have Inglis and Hodges.

Would certainly play centre for Cronulla, but winger for Australia.

Daniel Fitzhenry.

The ONLY player EVER to score a try in a World 7's final, NRL Grand Final AND World Club Challenge.

If ANYONE can tell me another player who has achieved this feat then i will deadset give the game away..

It's been a long time since we have had genuine world class wingers imo. Tuquiri and Sailor were probably the last two. Alot of the reason, as mentioned, is the moving of any half decent winger into another position, and for some reason wingers feel they should move or just being on the wing is seen as a snub (ie Jake Webster)

Minichiello was a class winger before he got moved to fullback, only spent a few years on the wing though.

I would not spend more than 80k for a winger.

Glorified orange peelers imo.

There have been some wonderful specialist wingers in recent times though who hve been unparralelled in their positions nd couldn't have played elsewhere. matt Sing and Tingha Blacklock for example. Kris Inu was twice the winger he was as a centre. Then there's Grothe, who despite some awful defence at times, has overall been exceptional. Manu Vatuvei is another.

They all look like world beaters when the engine room rolls and the halves/FB do their thing,I guess I would rather spend the money in those positions than a wingman.

Sing is easily my favourite winger in my time watching footy. Pulled off some amazing trysavers in his time.

Every now and again there is a winger you would spend big on as they can turn a game and that crowds will pay to see. Martin Offiah is one that springs to mind in my generation.

I also think that as the game has changed and we now have forwards that are as quick as wingers the real speedsters that would make a half break and be gone down the sideline for an 80metre try no longer have the room or pace difference to do it.

Matt Sing was my favourite winger.

His positional play and defense is what sets him apart from others. Probably one of the very few wingers with a football brain, as he managed to put himself in the right position always and read opposition attacks very well.

Added to that he was lightning fast and fabulous on his feet.

yea.. who cares what he did in those games.. one of them being a GF..
hahahahahahahaha...

maybe you should call yourself.. wataidiot.

Hahaha this is coming from the bloke who thinks Turner is a good winger

Scoring a try on its own means nothing. He could've fallen over the line for all we know.

Fitzhenry, along with Turner are examples of the declining quality of wingers around today.

Certainly don't want to put him in elite company, but Robertson has been gold for Manly since being signed, and is 1 of the most solid wingers going around. Is quick, great in the air, has a great knack for scoring tries and doesn't miss a game

His 3 in the 2008 GF were all high quality finishes

Depends on your era. Eric Grothe Snr was head and shoulders the best Australian winger I have seen. Todays version would be Brett Stewart's speed with Fui's power.

Then again, older folk would swear by Ken Irvine.

I disagree - most wingers these days played most of their junior footy at centre/fullback. I can understand this, as the physical step up from NYC to NRL level is huge, and it takes time to bulk up.

The result is that we have very few specialist wingers these days. Sing was the best I've ever seen. Ever since he left the Cowboys have struggled to either score points or stop them - we can't seem to find a winger who can do both at the same time.

Also, John Williams was IMO the best Cowboys player in 2008 - and he's a winger. It's much harder for a winger to stand out because they don't touch the ball anywhere near as much as the other positions, so this is no small feat.

You didnt watch the game? you cant recall the try? you dont know how well Fitzhenry was playing in that finals series? Obvously not.

Have you even watched Turner play any Storm games?

You still watch Rugby League games dont you?

Had a few good years down here too, wasn't our..."standout", but a damn good player.

Well you have made it quite obvious that you are dribbling from your rectum by announcing publicly that you are making assumptions without watching the games which are in question. Wataidiot indeed...

One only needs to look at WHO he beat in that highlights reel. Virtually the best players in the world and many representatives too!!

Showing plenty of ticker to take on Sonny-Bill and Frank Pritchard.

List of some of the players he simply outclassed on BOTH flanks AND 5/8th in the clip:

Luke Patten
Rhys Wesser
Matty Bowen
Mitch Brown
David Peachey
Paul Gallen
Lance Thompson
Corey Parker
Sam Thaiday
Greg Inglis
Johnathan Thurston
Ty Williams

So he was running straight through Australian and Origin reps on left and right sides of the field. 2010 will see him run through representative opposition in the middle.
