WNRL 9 a side

is the women’s rugby league competition to rival the AFL.

On Wednesday NSW Rugby League announced the creation of a nine-a-side under-18s women’s league to start next year.

To be run over nine weeks, NSWRL officials will shortly start seeking expressions of interest from NRL clubs to take part in the first full-scale women’s competition in rugby league.

With the inaugural AFL’s groundbreaking eight-team women’s league to be played in February and March in 2017, the race for female participation in sport is heating up.

Named the Tarsha Gale Nines, in honour of the former Australian and NSW captain of the 1990s, the women’s rugby league tournament will run alongside existing junior representative competitions, Harold Matthews and SG Ball.

Jillaroos Kezie App, Maddie Studdon, Ruan Sims, Alana Ferguson and Jen Latu.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for our female players. Women’s rugby league has come a long way in recent years and we are thrilled to introduce this game-changing under 18s junior representative competition,” NSWRL chief executive David Trodden saidIf successful, the new tournament will become a stepping stone to a women’s version of the NSW Intrust Super Premiership, which could be introduced in the next three to five years.

The NSWRL has offered a significant increase in funding for female pathway programs.

“The NSWRL is very excited by the opportunity this provides for female rugby league players in NSW,” said NSWRL chairman George Peponis. “Women play a huge role in the game of rugby league — and the NSWRL is proud of its ever-increasing commitment to grow the game across this great state.”

The AFL women’s league format will include six home-and-away rounds with a top four and grand final.

Awesome.

And about time too.

But why can't they put these on before NRL games?

Heaps of dads/mums/parents/carers/grandparents take their daughter/granddaughter/niece to the footy. Imagine rocking up to a NRL game and seeing the ladies in the game before.

That said, baby steps. But anything that gets women and girls in to footy has to be a great thing.

why is it "about time?" - this frenzy for womens competitions all seems very fake to me. Are there really that many women who have been desperate to play Rugby League or AFL over the years?

In my opinion this is all a cynical grab by AFL and rugby league to win the mum/women vote.

AFL have been recruiting women from other sports, RL is going to do the same. It is all going to weaken the sports that women have organically pursued (hockey, basketball, football etc).

All the women in my family and circle of friends, and including work colleagues:

Love RL.
Play forms of it - touch, flag...
Analyse and discuss game play, teams, squads, coaches.
Agree that the Jillaroos increasing presence is great for the game...for men and women.
Many are mothers, aunts, grandmothers, or friends of, kids who play on the weekend. Some coach, some administrate.

And Women's RL hasn't just started over night. It's been going in Sydney for 20-25 years at least. It's about time, I mean, that they got respected, and a better deal. Like women's cricket with the WBBL or soccer with the W-League.

If there's a cynical move from any of the major codes, its AFL. RL is just legitimatising and promoting something they already had.

Yeah, my attitude is probably based on the timing of AFL and NRL scrambling over each other.
The NRL should appoint women to run it (just assist with funding), including changing rules to suit the womens game.

I love watching the women play. They go hard at it.
Growing up there were plenty of girls that played footy but couldn't follow on cause there was nothing for them. Hopefully this expands into something bigger. I'm all for it

If they affiliate themselves with the NRL clubs and play in their colours then I think it would be easy for the public to get behind them and watch. I know that I would have more interest in which team won or lost then just randomly watch teams whether girls or boys play.

I would watch. Infact I did when the Auckland 9s were on. I would go out on a limb and say it was better than mens 9 a side

How is this the "first full scale women's comp"?

It's not full scale by any stretch and there are women's RL comps being played around the country. In typical NRL style their response to an afl national comp is to set up a half arsed nsw comp.
