MANLY winger David Williams will have shoulder surgery next week after he was ruled out for the season on Friday afternoon.
The former NSW and Australian winger was hoping to make a surprise return for the Sea Eagles in their last-round win over the Dragons but was ruled out when he failed a fitness test.
Scans yesterday ruled him out for the year, with a shoulder reconstruction required next week.
Manly coach Des Hasler said the 23-year-old Parramatta junior was shattered with the news.
Hes very despondent, the coach said on Friday.
He hasnt played any football this year and is pretty upset.
Its very frustrating for him, especially when he was coming off a troubling year last year with injury.
Its definitely a blow.
Williams suffered the injury at the start of the year when preparing for Manlys opening-round clash against the Tigers.
A pre-match training injury on the eve of that game ended his 2010 NRL campaign.
Hasler said if Williams had of got through his fitness test ahead of the Dragons game, he would have made a return.
But hes now got to have surgery, the coach confirmed.
Williams is the second big-name Sea Eagle to be ruled out for the year following the season-ending loss of Brett Stewart (knee).
But while their absence is a blow for the club, Manly is well served this season in the outside backs with Ben Farrar and Tony Williams cementing themselves in the starting line-up.
