Bring back Barry Ross

He's still around. He gave a talk, I refuse to call it a speech, at the Newington College rugby union season launch in '13. Can you believe those pretentious wankers have a season launch for a school boy comp. Barry told stories about his time working with Rex Mossop, that's it.

Raymond is a good sideline commentator, but as a caller he is irritating.

100% agree.

I believe Raymond is only a sideline commentator now, and hasn't called NRL matches on FOX since they revamped their NRL coverage and Joel Caine and Vossy were promoted.

Years ago it was him, Warren Smith and Mark Braybrook as the main callers for FOX and we could only put up with Smith.

That was the line-up for 9 seasons during 2003-2011. Amazing to think Fox kept that trio for that long. Matt Russell replaced Braybrook in 2012, who was demoted to the Under 20 comp (which Russell was calling the previous year). Thank God for that, as Braybrook was by far the worst caller Fox has had since its inception, with his repetitive "They MUST score....", not to mention towards the end of his tenure, he picked up that annoying Rabs/Gus mannerism of becoming fixated on a particular issue (e.g. referees), and then harping on about it during the match coverage.

When FOX first obtained sole PayTV broadcasting rights in 2001 (previously were sharing with Optus during 1998-2000), IIRC Smith/Braybrook/John McCoy were the inaugural callers during 2001-02, with Smith being the head of their NRL coverage calling the marquee matches (replacing Greg Clark, who switched to Fox's Rugby Union coverage, although Clark did call the occasional NRL match when one of the main callers were unavailable). Raymond started as sideline commentator in 2002, before replacing McCoy as caller in 2003.

Union is Barry's first love.

Brett Kenny & Whiz Freeman made Beaver & Scotty Prince look like consummate professionals..

Actually the thread should be re-named in their honour..

Turvey was just as bad..

Steve Mortimer made no sense to me as a commentator. It helps if you are articulate. I quite liked Michael Crocker on 702 but he's gone.

Geez I remember old John McCoy he started with Fox in 97 then finished with them in 2002. He did mostly Broncos and Cowboys towards the end, and had Wally Lewis and Glenn Lazarus as his co-commentators. The following year Fox flicked them all and replaced them with Raymond, Pearce and Alexander.

Not sure what network McCoy was with prior to Fox but after 2003 I noticed he would occasionally call the Qld cup games for ABC in David Wrights absence and called the Rugby 7s for the Commonwealth games.

Fatty ,Daley ,Lewis were or are the worst biased dumbest commentators ever.

Not counting the kiwis. But geezz they have clean bus windows.

Anyone heard Gowie on ABC. It is nice that the government has a quota for special needs people to be employed there.

He was signed to Fox Sports at the beginning of the year, after the Charity Shield game I'm pretty sure they gave him the flick. Words couldn't describe how bad he was.

My least favourite co-commentators though (and there's a few) are Gasnier, Lewis, Anasta, Fien (though his slip up the other weekend was hilarious) and Menzies. All of them are awful. Gasnier and Anasta are almost the same so why they're both used as much as they are on the same channel is annoying, especially when they're joined by Shirvo. It was even sadder that they got rid of John Gibbs on a Sunday and replaced him with Jimmy Smith, I don't mind the bloke but when Gasnier is on there too it's hard to watch.

Fatty isn't/wasnt so bad because he never tried to hide his bias

No love for Belcher? Can't stand him, dribbles most of the game and always seems to completely miss things on replays, it's so irritating, every game I end up screaming at the tv telling him to open his eyes.

Gower at the start of the year was laughable, Fox obviously never gave him a trial prior or anything.. I actually felt sorry for the bloke.

Wally "robot" Lewis is the worst. He was very biased against the Raiders the other night too, I was quite surprised...

Wally Lewis, I hate to say it but the guys is just not a natural. He also has worked hard at it, he received media training when he was newsreader. Lewis kind of just reiterates what the other commentators have already said but does not add any new insight.

As a panelist Terry Kennedy is the worst. He literally does not know anything about the game and speaks the longest as well. I never knew why Channel nine kept him on all those years on the Roast, he clearly was the weak link out of the panelists.
