a-league is like the kiddies rollercoaster .... it goes up a bit every now and then, but then mostly comes back to the ground

I agree.

I'm a fan, but I'm not going to jump in here all the time like the OP and pump up the A-League tyres with a stupid thread.
I'll just quietly post some figures.
The A-League's going ok atm, but in 12 months time, it might be shite again.
I'll enjoy the current ride.
Bandwagoner.......no.
Fan..........yes.

The GWS Midgets averaged 38k after their first game and we all know how well their crowds went from there  Someone get this douche some AMI Nasal spray.

i actually watched a bit on the weekend - well kind of - i was cooking the bbq and eating at hte same time, but i put it on a had a bit of a look

wanted to see superman in FC colours .... he's a little fella hey!

it was a great free kick he took .... i'm obviously no expert  - but i've always felt like australian soccer/football hasn't had very good finishers - they play tough and physical with a bit of run and gun, but they seem to spray the ball all over the place or mis-kick when they get near goal

briniging in big guns will raise some interest, but can it help lift the skill level of the league in the future?

We've had massive participation in this country for decades. Just about every kid plays soccer.

It's surprising that it hasn't managed to translate into many quality players at senior level. Australian soccer players just don't have the technical ability of their European/South American (and now Asian) counterparts.

And because manipulating a sphere with your foot is so unnatural, it's a skill that can only be fully developed from a very young age.

That's up there with my knee theory. Soccer just isn't a big enough sport here for kids to keep playing into their teens and young adulthood. It's pro sport number 3 or 4 in the country whereas it's number 1 just about everywhere in Europe. Given those factors I think Australia have done well to produce such top notch soccer players. We'll never keep them though as the money is better overseas. Which is why the A-League will just keep being what it is. Good crowd for the weekend, but they won't keep up over the course of the season.

Your knee theory has merit and is likely true. When I was in the army there was backlash against the use of BMI as a measure of suitability for certain tasks, because a lot of heavily muscled blokes were fit but their BMI said they were obese.

It was proven, however, that even heavy guys with low body fat suffer far more lower body injuries than lighter fellows. Your knees don't care whether you are carrying too much muscle or too much fat. Weight is weight.

The need for early development of technical soccer skills is widely known. The fact this is due to humans not generally using their feet to control objects (as opposed to the hands, which is a completely natural action) is something I've read on numerous occasions.

Had the problem when I was trying to get into the police my BMi said I was morbid obese and had to lose about 10-15 kgs (maybe more), was only 100kg/6ft but was not fat at all - they wouldn't accept me until i lost the weight then I got another job anyway.

it plays its part for sure but there's also other stuff like a person's crural index(from memory that's what it's called for upper to lower leg bone ratio), height of centre of gravity. q angle i think it was called, foot arch, how a person pushes off their feet, hamstring strength, etc.

i did my first acl (good name for a rehab book) as a scrawny 6'2, 70kg git. now my bmi says i am a fat fk but my knees feel strong, or they did until i tried a batman style exit from a birthday party a few months back and misjudged the ground i was landing on in the dark. note to self:use the door next time.

as much as I enjoy the A League , the quality of football week in week out is shit and the crowds arnt really that great. Del Piero will have an affect for a while , but its a bit like the first season of the a league ... solid crowds and then just went downhill still they steadied out to a modest total.

I can't watch it. I feel like I am watching park football which in turn could lead to me wanting to neck myself.

However, I will watch it for Del Piero, what a legend.
