Before I start, can we all try to leave our ARL/NRL bias outside this thread, and simply think about the future of RUGBY LEAGUE as a whole.

That said, this is three ideas I have for improving RL in Australia and would like some feedback on what RL fans of other clubs think;

Firstly, I would like the NRL to change the structure of the board, by putting the panel's (3 News Ltd, 3 ARL) positions up for tender. Once bipartisan members are identified, the NRL would then to force the hand of NSWRL and QRL to sign to a mandate, effectively making the NRL the governing body of both State leagues, controlling everything at state level, except local or club derived funding. This would see a standardisation of the sport, across the country, as well as an even distribution of funding, to state level, from NRL/ARL products (Rep. games, etc.)

CONS;

  1. Loss of control by state officials,
  2. Potential to lose revenue for struggling clubs who rely on state league handouts,
PROS;

  1. One national governing body for the first time ever,
  2. Standardisation of the sport off the field,
  3. Even distribution of funding for grass roots clubs from both states.

Secondly, drop the TYC from the cable television contract, and play a mid-week knock-out competition between top NSWRL and QRL clubs. Crowds wouldn't matter so much, as this competition would be "made for pay TV". Effectively, this creates a real second tier competition, with grass roots clubs competing in a nationally televised comp.

CONS;

  1. Potential to create a "white elephant" competition,
  2. Potential to kill QRL/NSWRL completely (baring in mind, to negate this, the mid-week comp would be a relegation-based comp, with only the top 5 (or so) teams each season earning selection to be in this comp.)

PROS;

  1. A genuine national second tier competition,
  2. Potential for more TV revenue,
  3. Potential to gain more "grass roots" fans (think Redcliffe vs. Wentworthville GF:cool:).

Thirdly, the NRL would revoke all club licenses (yes, temporarily there would be no club registered in the NRL :shock:). The NRL then puts 14 licenses up for tender, with financial and geographical stipulations. Any consortium would be able to bid for these licenses, simply having to prove they are a financially viable franchise and happy to be located in the stipulated geographical area.

CONS;

  1. Older clubs (I don't recognise the term "foundation club", however I will keep that argument for another thread;-)) may struggle to get a successful bid, and as such RL will lose some fans,
  2. Potential to lose fans, who view the new structure as "business not footy".
PROS;

  1. Consortium's will be thoroughly audited before being allowed into the competition, and as such should be viable long term,
  2. The game can go national, with the geographical stipulations endeavoring to keep Melbourne, NZ, NQ, Perth locations,
  3. Knowledge of financial security for new franchises and the competition as a whole.

Of course, the reality is that these 14 franchises would more than likely be many of the same clubs we have now, however the clubs who are struggling would be opened up to new blood (new money) in order to put in a successful bid. Unfortunately, some clubs would fall back to their state leagues or be forced to merge.

So, thoughts on this idea (or 3 ideas; 1. one governing body, 2. mid-week combined states competition, 3. licenses for NRL franchises) and how you think they could be improved/modified in order to best serve the game?

Why only 14 clubs. Afl are going to 18. Reducing the number of teams makes no sense we should be looking at increasing the amount of teams.

This all sounds familiar

You are correct, if there is enough money, and skilled players for more then 14 teams, then by all means, more then 14 licenses should be offered.

Stupid. There is no need to restructure the whole NRL. Why destroy a successful product? Midweek comp involving reserve graders... please. Who'd be interested in watching that? And why would Foxtel waste time and money filming it and having a commentary crew for something no-one will take an interest in?

QRL and NWSRL have many fans now, who do "waste their time" watching them, usually to the extent of actually traveling to games around Brisbane/Sydney.

Foxtel currently "waste time and money" on filming an under 20 competition, which displays skill levels far inferior to those on display in the QRL/NSWRL.

Foxtel currently film/air; NRL tactics, NRL on Fox, Chooseday Night Football, Classic Grand Finals, State of Origin Classics, a QRL game, a NSWRL game, and films/repeats every game twice (or more) per week. I understand all the nostalgia games would cost next to nothing, but Foxtel has an invested interest in the sport, I doubt it'd cost much to film and commentate on a few extra games per week, especially as they could have sole rights to an entire competition. If it was pitched to them, they most likely would make it work. At the end of the day, QRL and NSWRL is streets ahead of TYC in skill level and excitement, and yet Foxtel films that.

We don't need massive changes like this. Why would we drop the U20's comp? It's a major trump card we have over the other codes.

Wait for the independent commission to get the whole 'one-ruling body' sorted out, which will lead to a much larger media deal in 2013, which will lead to re-expansion in Perth and Central Coast. Things seem to be progressing nicely atm.

Good idea.

Point 1 - Neither of the NRL partners would have control, which is acceptable compare to News Ltd bullying the ARL to set up an "independent" commission.

Point 2: great idea to keep some of the older plkayers in the comp and make the reggies a higher standard training ground than the Uner 20's comp it. We saw young Broncos last night get penalised for being outfoxed - not for doing things wrong. Put some old heads in the development comp to develop them!

Point 3: You would find that the franchises would still put Sydney clubs before the likes of Perth. Given the choice between Penrith's massive casino and whatever Perth has to offer, an investor would jump at Penrith.

I don't understand how it would be possible to run a mid week competition between sides in the NSWRL and QRL when just about all of the players involved in these competitions have full time jobs to go with their football careers.

I reckon Wollongong need their own team.

So, Unmerge St George and Illawarra.

Illawarra Steelers would be their own team, then merge St George and Cronulla.

St George-Cronulla Dragons

When our two clubs merged at the end of the 98 season, the Steelers were flat broke. 12 seasons on, the Steelers are still flat broke! Where will the money come from to support this returning Steelers outfit?

Also, you obviously didn't learn from the success that was the Northern Eagles. Why would you merge two clubs that seriously hate each other that no-one will support?

TV productions costs are quite steep. Live NRL style coverage costs somewhere in the region of $100,000 - $200,000/ hr on air.

It's not just 6 - 12 camera men and a couple of commentators. there are a bunch of people in the truck doing, direction, replays, graphics, co-ordination etc, floor mgrs, a bunch of techs to set it up and pull it down, hiring the the truck etc etc.

Toyota cup is cheaper because all the stuff is there for the NRL game anyway, so it's just wages and a short extension of the hire. Doing a completely separate comp is another thing all together.

some one has to pay. viewer numbers are unlikely to tempt fox, TV advertising will be minimal so it'd probably have to be funded by the ?RL in some way or a sponsorship to cover production costs. or get the ABC to cover it in some way. if you want the QLD and NSW side to play each other, you've got to cover the travel, transport and accom for the away team.

its an expensive enterprise, finding the money would be the major problem.

Saints had the money and the Steelers had the juniors. Seems to be a pretty good merger tbh. I figure the CC Bears will be similar in a lot of ways.
