Free tickets to Hazem's last game - would you go?

http://www.news.com.au/dailytelegraph/story/0,22049,25715678-5001023,00.html

RETIRING Bulldogs great Hazem El Masri could play his final home game in front of a record Sydney premiership crowd after more than 110,000 fans were welcomed to celebrate the occasion free of charge.
Hours after El Masri, 33, announced his retirement at an emotional Belmore Oval press conference yesterday, Bulldogs officials sent out invitations to members of all 15 rival NRL clubs to attend the winger's farewell game against the New Zealand Warriors at ANZ Stadium in round 25. Every member of the 8000-strong Bulldogs army will also be given two free tickets for the match, which is likely to be staged on Sunday, August 30.
Bulldogs CEO Todd Greenberg is hopeful of a 50,000-plus turn-out that could threaten the record for a regular season game in Sydney. That mark was set way back in 1966, when 55,934 people packed into the SCG to watch St George take on Balmain. Sydney's biggest NRL crowd for a non-finals game stands at 36,526 for last year's Bulldogs-Roosters grudge match at ANZ Stadium.
"All up there's over 110,000 people who are members of an NRL club - and every one of them will be given free entry to Hazem's final home game," Greenberg said last night.
"We want to make the occasion more than a farewell for a great Bulldogs player.
"It's a farewell for a great rugby league player and we think every fan should be given the chance to be part of that."
El Masri said yesterday he was likely to take up a community relations and development role with the NRL.

Setting a dangerous precedent. How is it ok, in the midst of a "financial meltdown" to let everyone in to a game for free? It's not even his farewell game anyway, as they will more than likely have a home semi.

The Dogs are guaranteed a set amount per game no matter how many turn up and how much is taken at the gate - like every team that hosts games there. Thus they can get away with a "free entry" event like this. Note that the sales of merchandise, food, and beverages would more than likely cover the outlay to the Bulldogs anyway. If I was in Sydney I'd turn up, because a) I love Rugby League and would jump at the chance to watch a game for free (though I'd pack my own lunch); and b) I admire Hazem as a player and as a human being.

OK, if that's the case, then why not make every game free entry??

If you shop at the Mall at Rhodes (IKEA) they're always giving away freebies to ANZ including the Dragons/Sharks game last year
I'm waiting for Hubble binoculars before I do ANZ again
with perhaps one unmentionable exception

Whilst I respect him, every minute of my life is valuable. I would hate to waste it at a Dogs match, much less one that I have no interest in whatsoever.

If I don't want my girlfriend breaking my arm I will (with the exception of if it's up against Dragons or I've got a Soccer final)...

If you could make an extra $15 out of every person who turned up to watch a game, wouldn't you?

It's a case of make money any which way.

Bit of a catch-22. If you don't charge entry you get more through the gate who will buy extras (food, drink and merchandise). But if you do charge entry, you get the gate takings but a smaller crowd and less money spent on extras.

If you look at it that way then the dogs aren't really giving anything away.
