The story in the CT today was essentially an amalgam of these two articles on raiders.com.au"

Royal Rumble at Raiders
08/12/04: The Canberra Raiders stepped off the rugby league paddock and on to the AIS wrestling mats yesterday, looking to refine their tackling technique for the 2005 National Rugby League season.

The Raiders will work with wrestling and American football coach Shawn Willis during the pre-season, with a view to making it a permanent part of their training regime.

Raiders coach Matt Elliott said the sessions had three main objectives: it helps give the players variety in pre-season training; it acts as a “weights” conditioning session; and it helps develop tackling technique, such as denying opposition offloads.

“Tackling relates to what the individual does, defence relates to what the team does. The biggest evolution in the game recently has occurred in defence. But you look at some of the teams that have been successful, it’s also what they’re able to do in the tackle,” Elliott said.

“It’s certainly an area we feel we’ve got a lot of improvement left in us and we want to be at the cutting edge of it. Having access to Shawn, who’s highly respected in wrestling in Australia and has some American football experience, is a bonus.”

Willis coaches ACT gridiron team the University of Canberra Firebirds and is also vice president of ACT Wrestling.

“I’ve tried to modify wrestling techniques to make it very transferable to rugby league,” Willis said. “It’s important in league that once you make the tackle you don’t lose control of it.”

The Raiders are coming to you
03/12/04: The Green Machine is gearing up for the “Regional Raid” on Saturday, December 11, giving fans the first chance to meet the Raiders squad of 2005.

Kids of all ages are invited to come along at 10am to have fun at free skills clinics, to be run by Raiders players in Queanbeyan, Goulburn and Cooma. Fans can then stay on to have a chat with their favourite Raiders players and get free posters autographed.

The Raiders have a full-time squad of 32 players this season, including nine new faces. The new star recruits such as Matt Adamson, Jason Smith, Craig Frawley and Lincoln Withers will be spread across the venues.

Senior Raiders players such as Simon Woolford, Jason Croker, Clinton Schifcofske, and Ryan O’Hara will also be there to pass on their experiences.

“The Regional Raid is an important way to say thank you to our fans outside the actual city of Canberra,” Raiders captain Simon Woolford said. “A lot of fans travel to come and see us play every week, so it’s good to be able to go and meet them in their town.

“I hope we get plenty of boys and girls coming along to pass and kick a footy with us. We want everyone to feel welcome, even if it’s just to come and have a chat with the players. We want it to be a real family event.”

The skills clinic will include passing and catching activities, tackle bag drills, relays, games and goal-kicking competitions. There are plenty of prizes to be won.

The players will break for lunch at 12pm, but fans are invited to come along to the selected clubs in each town so they can personally meet the team.

Anything that can help tackling technique of the players is a good thing. Despite howls from those who think 'management/coach must have stuffed up if they need an external person to teach them', the fact they are rectifying a problem is a big positive in my books.

good call, too bad he can't put it into practice by noticing the defects of players like Boogers and Thompson.

He's American and he is nuts. He makes us run till we throw up then hes makes us run more. He will definately put some agression into the team.
