THE BOYS ARE BACK IN TOWN
By Wayne Cousins
Friday, 6 November 2009
Wests Tigers players returned to Concord Oval today to begin preparations for the 2010 Telstra Premiership.
The NRL squad gathered for a series of tests and information sessions. It was also a chance for new signings Jason Cayless, Mitch Brown, Geoff Daniela, Mark Flanagan, Junior Moors, Arana Taumata and Tame Tupou to meet their new team-mates.
For lock Liam Fulton and utility Daniel Fitzhenry, it was a case of re-acquating themselves with some of their former team-mates.
Wests Tigers Football Operations Manager Alan Mair said it was pleasing to see the players back in the new state of the art gymnasium designed by High Performance Manager Steve Folkes.
“The players underwent endurance, strength and skin folds tests,’’ Mair said.
“They all came back with satisfactory results. Our new players really applied themselves well. The players will start full-time training next week under Assistant Coach Peter Gentle and Steve Folkes.”
Wests Tigers CEO Stephen Humphreys said one of the top priorities for 2010 was to improve the depth of the NRL squad.
“To this end, we expect to have a full-time squad of 34 players in 2010 along with six additional players who will train full-time over the off-season,’’ Humphreys said.
“If you think about our squad as 40 players, 11 of that squad played in the successful U20s side in 2009. It is great to see so many of our young players earning places in the top squad.”

I suppose the fulltime off season squad are juniors who will be given shot at the main NRL squad to cover rep squad selection / injuries / suspension in 2010? I also notice that Skando is missing so it loks like he has hung his boots up again. (Thanks Skando for your help last year)

That's only 38 isn't it. Maybe our recruitment manager has another child coming up through the grades ... the sort that means missing the likes of Inu, Hayne and Falou is barely felt. Shannon's brother Darren is set to make the No 1 jersey his own

Wow, have a look at the WT website and the NRL squad photo list- its huge now. Have to say there is plenty of choice and depth there now. At first glance, forwards have some good experience to go with depth and experience but backs seem a bit light on experience but still have depth and choice.

Looking forward to 2010.

I'm still gobsmacked by the freeflowing $$$ to recruit and expand the squad. I'll wait to see how things shake out over the off season but my initial thinking is that top 6 should be the minimum pass mark. I'm going to ponder this list tonite and try and shake it out into coverage for the various positions to see how we stand depth wise eg fullback, backs, halves backrowers, props & hookers.

Can anyone else play hooker apart from Farah?

could anyone in last years squad besides farah play hooker?

im guessing thats what our man fitzy has been recruited for.

also chris corby was the hooker in the 20s, but he is way off first grade

2009- Morris & Halatau- both gone now. I have some recollection hearing that Mark Flanagan from ESL can play hooker but havent seen that confirmed anywhere.

He can,but I like him playing lock,he hits hard,a good off season in the gym and he could be a surprise packet.

Hahaha Morris and Halatau were both great at dummy half. The way they threw it at runners' heads, shoulders etc, forcing them to stop and killing all momentum of the run was a sight to behold. I remember all the Morris lovers telling us he was such a good dummy half

I get your point - all I'm saying is that WT did have options in those 2 if Farah was unavailable for whatever reason or injured whilst on the field. Halatau or Morris were not the best or as good as Farah - WT last 'as good as' was Stuart Flanagan.

So who do WT plan to groom for that role then? Mark Flanagan or Fitzhenry as someone suggested?

Don't be surprised if the second choice hooker is Fulton.

He played several games at five-eighth in the ESL, and he can tackle.

And I see there's no Corey Payne or Rhys Hanbury in that squad.

Have they been released?

I spotted some weeks ago Payne had been dropped off the playing roster but no announcement made (yet, funnily enough WT were happy to give him a plug after that with his charity bike ride)

Hanbury- another one just dropped off the face of the earth without even the grace from WT to bid them farewell on the website. Sure, these blokes did not set the world on fire but we should at least have the grace to officially say good bye to them

With the departures etc, one would have to think Teflon was not pleased with the backline depth and performances.

Funily enough I reckon our problem was in the halves, we had good enough forwards and backs. Few world beaters but mostly solid and could do the job.
