Yamba's Luke Douglas has been named in the Junior Kangaroos rugby league team to play Papua New Guinea this weekend in Darwin.

The 19-year-old front rower impressed national selectors with a power-packed season playing for the Cronulla Sharks Jersey Flegg and Cronulla-Newtown Jets Premier League NRL teams.

Douglas played in the Sharks Jersey Flegg side that went down to Parramatta in the premiership final.

Parramatta were eventually beaten by St George in the grand final that contained another Grafton lad, Danny Wicks.

Last year Douglas played in the St George Under-18 SG Ball team.

[font=Arial,Helvetica][size=-2] [/size][/font]Douglas flew out of Sydney on Wednesday morning with the rest of the Junior Kangaroos.

"It’s unreal, Luke was really excited at being selected," Douglas’s mother Trish said yesterday.

"I spoke to him last night after he arrived and said the team had just finished a gym and training session.

"It’s very hot up there (Darwin). He was pretty tired. It’s been a hectic couple of weeks.

"It’s a very exciting time for him as he will also play in the curtain raiser against New Zealand A before the Tri Nations match at Telstra Stadium next Saturday."

Douglas is considered one of the brightest young prospects in the NRL and his recognition by national selectors ensures he will remain under the representative spotlight as he works towards a spot in the Sharks first grade team.

The Douglas family travelled to Sydney for the NRL finals series and to watch Luke’s brother, 16-year-old Kane turn out for the NSW Country Rugby Union team at the Under-16 Australian Championships at Riverview.

"There were about 12 teams from around Australia and they stayed at Riverview for the week," Trish Douglas said. "The NSW Country team did really well finishing third to eventual winners, NSW All Schools. "Kane really enjoyed the experience."

No need to sign him. Schoolboy rugby union isn't that high standard. I've played against Dan Roach [current Australian Schoolboys rugby prop], he's a cat. Its all a game of politics - the richer you are, the higher you go. Look at the Aussie schoolboys side - theyre full of Joeys and Riverview kids.

i saw douglas brother play in the u/16 champs. don't remember much about him. if he was that good he would of caught my eye.

again ive seen roach play A LOT of times and he is no cat.

Its all a game of politics - the richer you are, the higher you go. Look at the Aussie schoolboys side - theyre full of Joeys and Riverview kids.

That's because all the good players are poached by private schools offering free tuition. I guarantee you sometime like Kurtley Beale (Joeys/Aust. Schools flyhalf) his family would not pay one cent for him to go to Joeys.
The good players simply are brought to the school under fake scholarships.
