D!ckheads who are so hung up on the technical side of music they don't take the time out to actually enjoy music for what it is. You know the ones, they usually play an instrument themselves (more than likely the guitar) and go to a concert as if they are there to write a 3000 word critique. Last year i was at the big day out trying to enjoy the Janes Addiction set while a couple of geniuss behind me were going "oh did you see that he missed that fret there, ohh i wonder what kind of amp they are using, most likely (insert brand A), they're rubbish i use a (insert brand B), is that a pick he's using? oh man i like to strum with my fingers, yadayada yada), they judge music on how easy it is to play (opps i mean copy cos they couldn't come up with something on their own) rather than how it sounds. And they discredit immortals because they can play it at home with noone listening, rather than giving credit where its due.

And yeah, back to the topic at hand.

I agree, music is pure escapism, not be be over analysed, like some of us do here.

Chill out and enjoy, if not, turn it off.

I also hate it when people can only appreciate music in its historical context.

e.g. "All rap after Run DMC is crap" or "all punk is just a weak imitation of the Sex Pistols".

Now while I do believe that context is important, I think that good music is good music, even if it's totally played out and cliched. Just because someone else did something similar and better, doesn't mean that it's not good.

Samwise you don't think Eddie Van Halen or Joe Satriani didn't enjoy playign the guitar with emotion??.....they where technically brillant yet where like little kids on stage with a toy.

Watch the old Van Halen film clips and you will see what im talking about.

As for the fellows your talking about watching Janes Addiction?....fair enough a concert you can afford to f**k up here & there.....all greats have!..but the thing is f**king up in the studio and then releasing it is a different story.

As for being able to play a simplistic piece and getting credit??...i'll ask you this, would you classify playing chop-sticks on the piano as being more talented then a person playing a symphony from Mozart??....it's clear cut what requires more talent to play, some people i know practice day in day out but cannot play a piece very good.....they just don't have the talent.

True in ways Thierry?

But do you think music needs to sound good Thierry??.....no wonder i never liked Voodoo chile or Jimi for that matter

I love a great sounding solo, the best solo i reckon i have ever heard is the solo to Comfortably Numb by Pink floyd, a piece of musical genius created by true talented musicians!

'Nothing Else is Matters' is perhaps the easiest thing to play on a guitar, ever. Even I can play it. Its the only thing I can play on a guitar.

But it sounds awesome, despite its simplicity, and that makes me smile. :D

I don't believe that guitar talent, or whatever, translates automatically into musical talent. Guitar talent is having amazing control over what you can do with a guitar (this of course applies to any instrument), but surely musical talent is knowing what to do with that guitar, regardless of how difficult it is, to please people's ears?

Simplicity is what made Kurt Cobain so good

good simple grungy song

most kids that pick up a guitar can play Nirvana songs

I agree they don't have to be a Schism, to be a good song

All good guitarists have control over there instruments, that's why they don't have to look at the fret board when playing or could fit a solo into a song without not previously ever hearing the song, one great musician doesn't haven't more control over a guitar then other.....same applies to the piano.

As for simplicity of a solo or song??...i agree in ways but writing the lyric's to " im too sexy" doesn't require as much talent as writing " Bohemiem Rapsody " or " Stairway to heaven".

Twizzle, if Kurt could tune his guitar & play in time i'd give him more credit, he was inventive & had potential as a good guitarist but couldn't get the basic's of the guitar right.

given that Stairway to Heaven and Bohemian Rhapsody are both piles of self indulgent poo lyrically, I dont think they really showed any more talent than "I'm too Sexy"! Rockers peddling indulgent waffle as supposedly profound lyrics sh*t me to tears, Jim Morrison was another prime offender (yet plenty of stupid kids actually consider the ass-clown a freakin' poet!!)

C'mon SpaceMonkey.....the songs where lyrically pretty good compared to " Im too sexy" or " Strawberry kisses" by Nikki Webster

I do agree with you on Jim Morrison though, they will grow up though and realise that there are better.....just like me with Hendrix

What about Comfortably Numb or Imagine then?
