I chose Vella based on the form he showed when he started playing firstgrade in 99 through to 01. If you remember Jake Vella played approx 7 to 9 games for New Soth Wales he also played in a couple of tests for Australia.

His form at the time was sensational and matched it with the best of them, week in week out. However I am torn between Cay-lo and Vella for that last spot. And believe Nathen will take over from that spot by the end of next year.

With all respect Misty bee

I firstly commend you re: selection of Paul Taylor, a real underrated champion. Ahead of his time as far as fullbacks are concerned. Could play today.

Now no Steve Ella, come on you must be joking. I love Lyon but he is no Ella , yet (That is why I put him on the wing)

Schifcofske , interesting (He is good, but Brian didn't think so, unfortunately,) Besides Gothe we have never had another world class winger.

Beetson, way past it when we acquired him. Not really an eel in my opinion.

Your bench is strange, Mahon, give me a break !!! He had one good season.

Dean Pay is in my side because he was an intimidator, a real tough man. Ask the two Nathan's who they most learnt from. By the way he was recently rated an Parra immortal, so I'm not the only one who rates him.

Cayless has to be in the side. Youngest captain of the eels ever. NZ captain, very well respected by all including opposition packs.

Ok, I'll have a go at this... Saw my first game as a wee kid in 1978 (vs Newtown at Henson Park).

1. Paul Taylor - swaps with Sterlo in attack, and tackles anything at hooker
2. Luke Burt - ? his best is yet to come
3. Mick Cronin
4. Steve Ella - utility value was all that stopped him being a great
5. Eric Grothe
6. Brett Kenny
7. Peter Sterling
13. Ray Price
12. Jason Smith - talent and brains, the Kenny of his era
11. Nathan Hindmarsh
10. Ron Hilditch - hard man, could also play hooker
9. Steve Edge - solid captain
8. Bob O'Reilly
14. Jamie Lyon - best is yet to come as well
15. Nathan Cayless - still going strong also
16. Dean Pay - our only source of forward aggro in that era
17. Arthur Beetson - late in his days, but still a great ballplaying forward

Boy, that other wing spot is a hard one #-o

Too right. Edge was a great leader however Rayner was the better hooker by far. 203 first grade games for the Eels, 1960 World Cup rep.......
