Your Plan for a National Competition

What would your plan involve if you had the next 20 years to create the ultimate Rugby League competition in Australia.
The rules are:
-Unlimited Funds
-You must include what years you would enter and dissolve teams
-How you would market the competetion
-Any ideas for extra competetions.

Try to make it as detailed as possible as it makes it more interesting.

OK this is what I think would be good:

1-Sydney Roosters
2-Canterbury-Bankstown Bulldogs
3-Parramatta Eels
4-Cronulla Sharks
5-Many-Warringah Sea Eagles
6-Penrith Panthers
7-Newcastle Knights
8-Canberra Raiders
9-Brisbane Broncos
10-North Queensland Cowboys
11-Melbourne Storm

Following Teams Relocated

12-South Sydney->Adelaide=Southern Rabbitohs
13-Wests Tigers->Perth=Western Tigers
14-St.George-Illawarra->Full time to Wollongong=Illawarra Dragons

Following Teams Created

15-Central Coast Bears
16-South East Queensland-Not necessarially the Dolphins, preferably second Brisbane team.

Following Teams Disbanded

#-NZ Warriors

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Criteria For NRL Teams

-All teams must have their own all-seater stadium with at leas 20,000 capacity
-All teams must have a reserve grade team which will create a national reserve grade competition
-With the Warriors gone all teams must take on a feeder team in the Bartercard Cup, which will be funded and expanded by the NRL

I had a whole heap of stuff floating around in my head but that's all I have for now.

For once, just once, I'd like to have my socks knocked off and see someone put forward their own team they follow as one to relocate.

Wests Tigers to Perth   Canterbury to Wellington   Sharks to Adelaide  , I'm glad you don't run the game. Moving sides like these to those places are sure fire ways for the club to put up the for sale signs. Plus lose thousands upon thousands of supporters to the game.

2005 - Gold Coast accepted into NRL for 2007
2006 - Territorial External Draft introduced. Tri Nations held in Australia and New Zealand with games played in Melbourne and Adelaide
2007 - NRL expands to 16 teams with introduction of Gold Coast Dolphins
New TV deal sees NRL broadcast FTA three times every round (Friday Night live, Saturday night, Sunday afternoon)
2008 - Wellington and Central Coast accepted into NRL for 2010. New Zealand wins World Cup after beating Australia in semi-finals.
2009 - State of Origin game played in Melbourne. Great Britain wins the Tri Nations and asks Daniel Anderson if that means they can be called world champions now.
2010 - Wellington and Central Coast join the NRL, now expanded to 18 teams. The length of the season is reduced to 22 rounds. The Top Eight remains.
2011 - In a historical first, the Cowboys, Broncos, Dolphins, Knights, Storm, Warriors and Raiders all qualify for the finals, with poor old South Sydney flying the flag for Sydney.

I would keep the comp as is until 2008 were i would add the expansion club to the Gold Coast.

2010 would then see the inception of the 2nd New Zealand team as i think this is more of a priority than the central coast, i would imagine that the club would be based in Wellington.

2012 $10 million offer for a sydney based club to relocate to perth to take over from the recently defunct W.A. Union side.

2015 We still have 17 clubs

2017 A second Brisbane club is included into the competition as the intrest in RL is fevour pitch.

2019 The game would stay at 18 for the forseable future.

criteria
All clubs must play in 24,000 seater minimum stadiums
The Salary cap will be payed buy the League which will be increased to $4 million in 2007 when the TV contract is signed
The season will run over 22 weeks with 4 weeks for finals
Weekends will be put aside for State of Origin
Rugby Union juniors will be excempt from the salary cap until the age of 21
All clubs are to have a minimum of 10,000 season ticket holders
All current rules of the game remain the same.

2005 - As is, no Tri-series. Acceptance of GC Dolphins (? - still don't like the name) for 2007. Wests Tigers and Sharks announce their intention to move to Perth and Adelaide respectively over a 4 year period, 2 home games there in 2006, 4 in 2007, 6 in 2008 and 9 in 2009, retaining 2 games in their traditional area. Origins in Brissie, Sydney and Melbourne (Telstra Dome). Allocation of zonal junior areas.

2006 - Resumption of the Country Challenge Cup, with the pre-season trials played exclusively in country areas, Perth, Adelaide and Wellington. Straight Knockout with the premiers receiving a bye in the first round. Tri-series in England with Aust v NZ home and away before touring. Acceptance of Southern Orcas and CC Bears for 2008.

2007 - The TV deal to require NATIONAL coverage of 3 FTA games per week (in a 16 team comp in 2008) at 8.30pm Friday, Saturday afternoon and 4.00pm Sunday, even down to regional operators (e.g. WIN) having prices set for the life of the deal. Origins and Internationals to be negotiated in seperate deals. GC Dolphins debut in NRL.

2008 - Orcas and Bears join the NRL in an 18 team comp. Three pools of six teams, pools play home and away within their pool (10 rounds) and the other pools home or away (12 rounds). 22 rounds, Top 8, 4 weeks of finals and World Cup to be played in Aust and NZ after the GF.

Don't know when the radio deal is up but it should be thrown open. Anyone who wants to broadcast games can.

Easy :D

i think the comp should settle with 18 teams when its cost effective and the game is paying its way.

The 16 team needs to come in sooner than later 2006 sounds great. Then a 17 and 18 in about 5 years time.

The only option for a 17th and 18th side should be Perth and Adelade to make it a truly national comp.

Places like Brisbane getting a second side or Central Coast should only happen if a sydney club falls by the wayside or relocates. I saw someone post a 10 million dollar incentive to relocate, not a bad idea but in the terms of NRL 10 million is jackshit its bearly enought to run a club 1 year. If they want a club to relocate they need to offer the big bikkie 40 - 50 million to move to areas the NRL approves.

Don't move any sydney teams. Sydney is the biggest and best market and RL owns it. Don't damage it by moving teams... You will only lose market share. Expand yes but do it over time and don't rush it. Bring in GC, CC and Wellington(in that order) over the next say 7 - 10 years then look at SA and WA. Each area should be given a new side that they can call their own, not some sydney team. Teams can't be just thrown into these areas.

The long term goal needs to be a 20 team comp by a certain date. I have no idea what that date is but it wouldn't be within the next 15 years imo.

As RU struggles the Raiders will take over their fledging RU brother and the Brumbies tag will be a token for the great Canberra club.
