Cronulla's chief executive Tony Zappia has stood down from his position today.
The board has demanded a response from him over a recording that throws new light on a case involving former employee Jenny Hall.
In a statement, Cronulla's chairman, Barry Pierce, said that the board had accepted an offer from Zappia to stand down, effective immediately, and had demanded a response from Zappia and his legal team by Thursday.
Pierce said that Zappia was entitled to due process and the opportunity to respond.
He said the board would wait until it had received that legal advice and a lot would depend on that.
"Tony has reserved the right to seek independent legal advice to answer fresh allegations brought forward on a new report last night," Mr Pierce said.
He said the board would request that Channel Seven provide the tape so that the board could establish its "authenticity" and staff members would also be interviewed in relation to the allegations.
The decision follows an explosive development that has rocked the NRL involving a recording that throws new light on the circumstances surrounding the $20,000 payout to former Cronulla employee Jenny Hall.
In the dramatic tape recording, played on Channel Seven News last night, Zappia tries to blame a wall for the severe facial bruising suffered by Hall and then he attempts to appease her by showing her pornography on his work computer. He also refuses to allow her to take sick leave.
