Dave Taylor is my hero

Every time I watched a Raiders game as soon as Baptiste come on the momentum totally swung and Raiders were under the pump.

That does happen but there’s also been games where his speed out of dummy half has turned games around for us. He’s a pretty solid hooker, just doesn’t have the arsenal that Hodgson does.

So what you're saying is you watched that Finals game where Hodgson got injured :p

But yeah, I had the same thought - the Raiders struggle to get their attack going once Hodgson goes off and they end up defending more

That's fair, but he's not got a contract yet. He's trailing with the club for a deal. IF he gets a deal, it wont be big dollars and likely a year, with maybe another in the clubs favour.
He's not sitting on huge money like he has been at those clubs. So the risk/reward aspect is completely flipped. Even if Taylor "trains the house down" earns and deal and then becomes a lazy POS, he'll net himself 100-150k for this year and his career will be over. We burn barely above the league minimum.

The upside of course is that IF he does get it together, as unlikely as that is, but if he does get his head in the game. We've got one of the most damaging game breaking forwards in the game for bargain price.
That's a gamble worth taking given the small money we're talking about here
Nice idea in theory.
But what will happen is he'll 'train the house down'. He'll then have a blinder in the trials against reserve grade players. Come week 1 he'll be his usual lazy self, selfishness, not helping out fellow forwards, missing tackles. But he'll produce one amazing play, maybe a bullocking run or be involved in a try. So you'll ignore all the other stuff. You think if only he can build on that. And the same thing happens every week. You get that false glimmer of hope. And you hang on to that false glimmer. Just one more week, he'll come good. And when you finally get to your last straw he'll go out and have a blinder. Usually it's against the wooden spoon contenders, or against a team with a weakened pack. But it was never against the Bulldogs, or the warriors, or the rabbitohs in the years after he left. And you sudden believe Dave will kick on, but it's just a cycle. Until you get to the end of a year in a must win game. Either a final or a game to make the 8/4. It's in these high pressure games when the brain farts hit the hardest.

I think part of Dave's problem is the fact he is so talented that he's never refined parts of his game that his body type really should. Instead of working on his fitness, working on his offload etc etc, he wants to throw cutout passes, flick passes, chip kicks, grubbers, etc... he thinks he is a half in a front rowers body, as a result he doesn't have a penchant for the tough stuff, just the fancy stuff.

Lol sticky will turf his ass out week one if he does that. This isn't a marquee signing for a struggling club. He either performs or quickly finds himself lining up at Centrelink.

Yea because sticky is different to bennett, maguire, lang, Neil Henry.
It's an easy trap to fall into. That one good play he pulls off each week will have you believing you can fix him and succeed were so many have failed. The fact that you've signed him on a trial basis means you're already 'what if he comes good' mindset

We literally just let Paul Vaughan go because sticky didn't like his attitude. If Taylor doesn't put in I can guarantee he won't be seeing firsts.

Huge difference between vaughan and taylor. As has been said a few times, taylor is rated as one of the most naturally talented players ever, had the potential to be one of the greatest forwards, comes up with plays that not many other players can. With all due respect to vaughan he is another run of the mill prop. With the potential taylor has comes the temptation to keep to persevering well beyond what you would for any other player

Cool story. Give sticky a call and tell him all about it.

Seriously, feel free to bump this next year. You won't, because either Taylor will be playing gangbusters or no where near our firsts.

Used to lI've watching him be nowhere to be seen if yards were hard to come by and the attacking side was coming off their own line and getting hammered. Then pick when he would suddenly appear when they have a roll on and is a retreating defence to run at.

This thread is about Dave Taylor not Paul gallen

Problem for Taylor is the Raiders have so much depth in the forwards, that he might find it hard to get a crack unless injury's take a toll on the team. Taylor is not assured of a contract either he has to prove himself in pre-season training.

Maybe it's a good thing for him...get him to knuckle down for once!
