BRC would be lower in standard than the Ncle Rugby League that they were in this year. They seem to think the 160k salary cap in Ncle is too low so they must have some cash.

Wyong finished 7th in the Newcastle comp this year but apparently a player points system is operating there now and Wyong rejected Jim Beam Cup 10 years ago because they didnt want to comply with that.

Wyong have always had a few ex NRL players but the points cap and salary cap meant that they fielded few prominent players in 2012.

Stringer brought over Alex Moore, Ben Fitzsimmons and Dale Langford from the Entrance and Mitch Williams and Shaun Boss played a hand of games and they have a prop, Reg Saunders, who goes alright.

Stringer's first targets is Josh Mantellato and wants Boss back from the Kinghts full time. He has plenty of money and expects 80% of the squad to be new recruits.

I suspect he knows what is required and will be targetting players that have already been through the pathway and finished with that.

Wyong will provide an interesting contrast to the other clubs.

I wonder how many former Knights players or NRL players playing in the Newcastle comp will go to the Roos to get more exposure. If they do get a few they should still be competitive despite the absense of an NRL team to feed them.

It will only be players not signed in the Knights or Souths 32 man squad

I know we have had 2 of our guys interested, but it's a little far to travel from the US to Wyong for a trial. Perhaps, if it's something they look at, they may have the opportunity to have some of the decent players from growing nations come and play. Having a feeder from overseas increases your profile everywhere, and increases the talent in other nations.

Could we be going to see the West Coast Pirates join the NSW cup I wonder?
‘‘The commission has made a decision that at this time, it’s not in the game’s best interests to commit to any of the proposals that have come forward regarding expansion,’’ Grant said.
‘‘In making this decision we’re cognisant of the investment of time and money that some of the consortiums have committed to over the last 12 months or so.
‘‘We do not want them or their supporters lost to the game and commit that following the 2014 season we we’ll conduct a formal and full review on expansion.
‘‘The findings of this review will allow us to be much more specific about our requirement and the opportunity and timing of any expansion plans.
‘‘In the interim we’d like them to redirect their involvement and support to those parts of the games that exist today.’’
Given the ARLC won’t even consider the prospect of more teams until after 2014, it would seem that there will be no new teams in the competition until at least 2017.
It was suggested that some of the consortiums could enter teams in the NSW and Queensland Cups as an avenue towards a place in the NRL.

I think the ARLC should start a similar comp to the Bundy Cup in the non league states.

Lets sat for arguments sake:

3 WA teams (Perth, Fremantle, Kalgoorlie)
3 NT teams (Darwin, Darwin, Alice Springs)
2 SA teams (Adelaide, Port Adelaide)

And if Vic or Tas wanna put a team in then possible but too much travel.

The game of the week could be on Fox Sports on a Weds arvo and it is then a semi professional comp for those states where maybe some league stars can get unearthed as when the WA Reds were in the Jim Beam Cup the biggest gripe was travel. This way it's not as far.

TBF the WARL premiership is much much stronger than anything in the NT and especially SA leagues so not really any benefit to WA teams to do this. You probably could make up one good team for the NT and 2-3 teams from Vic with possibly 4 teams from WA to form a decent comp but what would be the point?

I would think the purpose of us joining the NSW cup would be:
1. To maintain and grow a fan membership
2. To keep bid sponsors engaged
3. To give WA players coming out of Toyota cup a chance to return home but stay in the NRL shop window
4. To give the best players in the WARL premiership a chance against the big boys and get noticed by NRL teams
5. To establish a professional club infrastructure in preperation for an NRL team

Would need in the region of $1mill+ budget plus the ARLC to cover travel costs so a pretty hefty investment. We could probably aim for 2000 members paying $100 a year, $500k sponsorship plus Pirate merch sales etc so would need around $300k in ARLC funding which considering they are going to spend $40mill a year on grassroots is do able.

We would struggle playing strength wise though and not sure how easy it would be to get decent players from the East coast/NZ to move to Perth to play.

Other Newcastle clubs are worried about Wyong as they reckon they have $400k to spend and Newcastle clubs are on on a $160k salary cap.

Cessnock are worried that halves Joel Brown and Riley Brown will head to Wyong.

http://www.illawarramercury.com.au/story/1226147/gallery-illawarra-cutters-aiming-higher/?cs=302

The Illawarra Cutters have begun building on their impressive debut season in the NSW Cup with a host of new signings and new-found confidence.

The Paul McGregor-coached squad returned for its first pre-season training session of the new year yesterday, sweating out a fitness session at the University of Wollongong.

After surging into the finals in 2012 - falling to eventual premiers Newtown, the feeder team to the Sydney Roosters - McGregor is hopeful of taking his campaign a step further in 2013.

The former NRL star turned coach is confident his side won't suffer from second-year syndrome in the competitive second-tier league.

"We've started our recruiting a lot earlier and our base has been built on last year's finish," McGregor said.

"To get the calibre of players that I have this year, along with the mainstay of guys that we had last year - eight out of the 10 that I really wanted to keep - it's certainly the kind of start that I want."

The Cutters have signed several new players for the upcoming season, as well as retaining the bulk of last year's ever-improving squad.

Among the new additions are Wests Tigers duo Gus Aiga and Nathan Waters, Penrith firebrand Junior Vaivai and Redcliffe Dolphins pairing Matt Hancock and John Kennedy, both star players in the Queensland Cup.

Familiar faces Michael Lett, Jarrad Hickey and Jared Allen have also been retained.

"It all looks well," McGregor said.

See your ad here
"Our expectation last year was to be competitive, but we did more than that and shocked a few people.

"What I expect from this year is not only to compete in every game but also to be a dominant side in every game.

"Each team we play, I want the opposition to know they're in a battle - I want them to walk away knowing they've played a team that competes," he said.

The Cutters will kick off their 2013 NSW Cup campaign with a blockbuster against Newtown on March 9.

This article is suggesting that Wyong will be a feeder club for the Knights.

http://www.sunshinecoastdaily.com.a...hin-plans-progression-to-newcastle-k/1704478/

FORMER Kawana Dolphins fullback Arthur Brown is settling in well to a new life, taking on a new rugby league opportunity, on the central New South Wales coast.

The 21-year-old - 22 on January 15 - moved to Wyong soon after playing for the victorious Dolphins in the Coast competition's grand final, to link up with Newcastle Knights feeder club the Wyong Roos.

"I'm very excited. It's a great opportunity and I'm going to take it while I'm still young," Brown said yesterday of his one-year contract.

Brown is already building an impressive rugby league resume.

As a teenager, he became one of the youngest players ever signed for a long-term contract with the Broncos.

He played with the Broncos under-20s, ran on with Redcliffe in the Q-Cup and contributed significantly to the Kawana Dolphins' unblemished 2012 season.

Legendary NRL coach Wayne Bennett has monitored Brown's progress through the schoolboy ranks and into the seniors.

They spoke early last year about possible opportunities with Newcastle.

The deal was done in September.

"He said it's a good opportunity and if I play well, anything's possible," Brown said. "He's known me from juniors - he's a guy I actually can talk to him, so that's good.

"I've just got to keep my head down and stay focused."

Standing at 190cm and weighing in at 108kg last season, Brown has developed strongly since his days as a lanky teen member of coach Rob Brough's rugby league school of excellence at Mountain Creek State High School.

Brough, who went on to coach Brown at the Kawana Dolphins seniors, described him as "one of the most skilful players" he had coached.

Brown shows equal respect for Brough.

"He loves the game; he's passionate about players and about the game itself," he said.

"EVERY time I've been coached by him, something good has come out of it."

The Wyong Roos, how

ever, have also now put their individual stamp on the young charge.

They have started grooming him for a position in the centres and he has already cut his weight back to 96kg to improve his speed.

"It's a challenge going from fullback to centre - the skills sets are different, the need to tackle more. Hopefully it'll be good," Brown said.

"They spoke to me about that and I'm working hard to do it. It's what they see in me, and if they see that, then I'm happy.

"I just want to make the first 13 at Wyong and play good footy."

The Wyong Roos play a Newcastle club side in a trial in early March.

Brown hopes a good showing will put him in the running for a possible call-up to the Knights' NRL side.

"That's my dream and I've been working hard for it," he said. "If there's some injuries, and I've been playing good, we'll go from there."
