Ray Lindwall ??

Jack played on after WWII but I think Ray concentrated on his cricket after catching a litany of tropical diseases in the Solomons and dropping a lot of weight.

How about Ray Laird?

In my book back in 1988 it would of been a better bet to merge the Sydney and Brisbane comps together, instead of just bringing in a single Brisbane team into the Sydney comp.

Fair enough i can see some of the weaker Brisbane teams would of died off and maybe a couple from Sydney too. As time went on a few of the Brisbane teams by now would have premierships to their credit and created strong clubs.

That was a talking point back then. I liked the debate about making the changes based on clashing colours eg. Out North Sydney and in Wests Panthers (no doubt about that one); Out Brisbane Easts in Balmain; Out Sydney Wests in Brisbane Souths, etc, etc, etc.

What would the comp look like if the Brisbane clubs merged with the Sydney clubs.

The discussions weren't about merging clubs but the two competitions and also about dividing Brisbane into North/South or even NSEW. Nobody dared to suggest getting rid of any Sydney clubs... somethings don't change.

If that had happend how many QLD clubs could have played alongside there N.S.W. counterparts and what size would of the crowds have been.

The ability of the clubs to compete would have been vastly different five years later by which time poker machines had been introduced into Queensland.

In 1987, none of them could realistically have competed with the Sydney clubs because of the huge financial differences between them.

That Wynnum team of the 80s was the best Brissie team I've seen. Miles, Scott, Dowling, Lewis, French. Would have given some of the Sydney teams a run for their money.

I suppose that begs the question could they have sustained that side if they'd been competing in the Winfield Cup. I know it's all hypothetical but those were exciting times especially when all the rorting was happening south of the border... oops, still is.

My dad was a life member of Brothers so I spent my childhood in the 70s and 80s going to nearly every game each sunday. The grand final in '87 was the swansong for the club and given the financial problems and arrival of the Broncos in '88 there was just no chance of survival.

The last few years my sons (6 & 4) have been old enough to understand the game and have asked what it was like going to watch matches when I was a kid. Three matches on game day, hardly any players made a living from the game, so much less commercialism and merchandise, tear off "doubles" for first try scorer, ice cream and talking to the players at the club afterwards, etc.

Being a Dragons fan you can still get some of that magic sitting on the old style hills at Kogarah and Wollongong but it is slowly disappearing.

Yep, grew up watching the Leprechauns. I played with Tony Rea and Les Kiss in our junior and school days and was coached by Noel Cavanagh. Loved the old BRL comp. Watched it every Sunday afternoon until Broncos and the State League stuffed up the comp.
