VB NSW Cup Rd #5 Preview – Auckland Vulcans vs. North Sydney Bears

By Corey Rosser

Another Mount Smart triple header is on the cards this Sunday and the opening match between the Auckland Vulcans and North Sydney Bears shapes as a mouth-w...atering contest.

Once again the game will be broadcast live on Sky Sport 2, with coverage starting at 12pm NZT, while Foxtel will show it throughout Australia from 10am onwards.

The last time these two met, in round 24 last year, they played out a thriller at Mount Smart Stadium, where the Vulcans produced one of the upsets of the season, triumphing over the table topping Bears despite sitting way down in eleventh position.

Auckland are a much improved outfit already in 2013 and sit inside the top eight after their draw against Windsor last week.

The Bears head into this match with a three win - one loss record and are an intimidating prospect under the leadership of forwards Josh Starling, who has NRL experience, and Tom Burgess, brother of South Sydney NRL stars Sam, George and Luke.

Unbeaten at home this year, the Vulcans could consider themselves unlucky to have missed out on two points last week but will take heart from what was a gutsy display against a tough Wolves team.

Silly dropped ball and penalties near the end of their defensive sets would have disappointed coach Willie Swann who will be demanding improvement from his troops this week.

The Bears will be brimming with confidence following a 42-12 demolition of cellar dwellers the Illawarra Cutters.

The home team welcome back Warriors and Kiwis front rower Russell Packer, who returns after off-season surgery for an ongoing bicep problem. The experienced Steve Waetford also moves to the wing to accommodate youngster Carlos Tuimavave’s return to the number six jersey.

The Bears maintain the spine of their team but lose inspirational back-rower Michael Crocker who played a starring role in their victory last week. Crocker will instead line up for the Bears NRL team the South Sydney Rabbitohs in their clash against the Warriors.

Halfback Harry Siejka will once again be a key figure for the Vulcans, while captain John Palavi, who played 80 minutes in the forward pack last week, also shapes as a crucial cog in the Auckland machine.

North Sydney will look to leverage off their impressive forward pack, while their talent out wide can cause damage if given the opportunity.

That's a damn solid team. Watene off the bench will be interesting. 5 quality first graders and 3 or 4 door-knockers, great squad.

Would love to see if Gubb still has that marker tackle where runs dives and flings his arms out at the Dummy half and knocks his legs out from under him.

Veteran Vodafone Warriors centre Jerome Ropati continues his comeback while Steve Rapira returns from injury when they line up against the Mounties in the New South Wales Cup today (3.00pm kick local time; 5.00pm NZT).
It will be Ropati’s third straight game for the Vulcans after making a full recovery from his latest knee injury.
Rapira, who’ll start in the second row, has been sidelined the last two weeks after a serious ear injury in the opening minutes of the Vodafone Warriors’ NRL clash against Cronulla on March 24.
Also in the side again today are Vodafone Warriors Glen Fisiiahi and Carlos Tuimavave. Fisiiahi had his first outing last week since being on bereavement leave when he lined up at fullback in the 10-22 loss to North Sydney while Tuimavave, sidelined since February with a broken hand, also came back and will again run at standoff today.
Set to make his New South Wales Cup debut is impressive Vodafone Junior Warriors winger Viliami Lolohea.
Sebastine Ikahihifo was originally selected at loose forward today but, with Jacob Lillyman and Elijah Taylor ruled out of NRL action this week, Ikahihifo is with the Vodafone Warriors for their encounter with Canberra tonight.
Among the players with NRL experience for the Mounties, Canberra’s feeder side, are Dimitri Pelo, Michael Bani, Jake Foster, Jarrad Kennedy, Sam Mataora, Mark Nicholls, Michael Picker and Shane Shackleton while former Vodafone Junior Warrior Scott Jones is also in the squad.

Good to see Scotty Jones still playing at a decent level. He'd have killed it in 1st Grade bar for his injuries.

VB NSW Cup Rd #6 match report - Auckland Vulcans vs. Mounties

BY CHLOE OLIVIAN at Aubrey Keech Reserve

The Auckland Vulcans moved into the top eight after they outclassed Mounties 28-6 at Aubrey Keech Reserve last Saturday afternoon.
...
Played in warm conditions, Mounties went into the game as favourites despite winning just two matches this season.

The Auckland Vulcans were looking to register their first win in Australia, having only beaten Newtown at Mt Smart Stadium.

And it looked like it was going to be a long day for the Vulcans when Mounties opened the scoring in the eighth minute after Mark Nichols scored.

Mounties had a couple of chances to increase their lead but were unable to add to their tally.

Auckland held firm and they leveled up just before the break when Suaia Matagi raced over. Harry Seijka added the conversion and it was 6-all at half-time.

The visitors started the second half on fire and hit the front for the first time in the game when Murray Iti scored under the posts in the 47th minute. Seijka had no trouble with the extras and the Vulcans were ahead 12-6.

Five minutes later, the Auckland side were at it again as Iti raced over for his second try after a short ball from Matagi.

The Auckland Vulcans shocked the Mounties side when five-eighth Carlos Tuimavave threw the dummy and then went himself to score in the 64th minute. The try was not converted but the Vulcans were in control at 22-6.

The scoring didn’t finish for the Vulcans with Tuimavave crossing for his second try of the game with two minutes remaining in the game. Seijka kicked his fourth goal of the game to make it 28-6.

The Auckland Vulcans now have the luxury of a bye, before they take on the Wests Tigers at Mt Smart Stadium No 2 on 27th April.

Auckland Vulcans 28 (Iti 2, Tuimavave 2, Matagi, tries: Siejka 4 goals)
Mounties 6 (Nichols, try; Cornish, goal)
Half Time 6 all
