Gold Coast should never have had a fourth chance. Self engrossed Sydney clubs will be the downfall of the NRL, I remember when the last tv deal was signed it was stated that the money given to the clubs would be used for them to get their heads above water and now that the new television deal has been signed off they are saying exactly the same thing. These clubs need to learn to budget within their own means and if they don't then live with the ramifications. Nobody helped the Bears yet all these clubs keep getting lifeline after lifeline, its a joke.
Well said and so true.

NRL should set a min 25k membership target for clubs, might make them take seriously building wider fanbases by taking games on the road and identifying with a secondary location such as Gosford.

There should be a criteria for not only potential NRL bids but also existing NRL clubs where all clubs/bids are based on a points system that includes juniors, area, memberships, income etc, etc.

But if there was a points system covering all the different criterias it would work. There is always going to be opposition from clubs the ARLC have just got to grow some balls and say "okay guys here is the criteria that you must qualify for to compete in next seasons competition". If clubs are low in one area they get 1 point, if the are high they get 5 points etc, etc.
Give them twelve months (being generous) for the new rules (criteria) to sink in and for clubs to try and meet the areas that they are weak in.

The problem with these 'meet these criteria or you're out' sort of ideas is that they don't factor in the differences that each club faces in meeting those criteria and they don't factor in the uneven playing field that many clubs currently face in the NRL right now.

Take the suggested 25K members and the 2 million sponsorship criteria alone, it's a lot easier for clubs like say the Broncos or Roosters who're on free to air every week to build and maintain an active supporters base of 25K and sell sponsorship space for larger amounts because their sponsorship space is inherently more valuable because it reaches a larger audience simply because it is on free to air more often, then it is for clubs like the Raiders, Knights or Titans who are rarely on free to air.

The Broncos also have an advantage in that they are the only representatives of the most popular sport in a huge market that they have all to themselves, which also makes gaining sponsorship and fans very easy.

So the question is how do you make the criteria fair for all clubs in an inherently unfair field?

The answer is you can't!

If you make standard criteria that mirror the highest possible standards of the most successful teams (that also operate under the easiest set of conditions) and make it so that they must be met by all teams or they're out (like the ones above in Sivs's and PRs' post) then you make a system where clubs in smaller or more competitive markets are screwed no matter the merits of them being in the competition and the adverse effect that would have on the game as a whole (so basically goodbye Melbourne, Canberra, Newcastle, North Queensland, GC, Auckland and if they ever get a team Perth).

But if you make separate criteria for each club (for example Brisbane must have 25K members but the Raiders must have only 10K) then it is seen as unfair on the larger clubs as your average Joe (and your journo with an axe to grind) sees only the difference in numbers and not the difference in circumstances (which all of you are also guilty of).

So criteria like these always end up as a mess for the governing bodies that introduce them, the best way to do it is to not have criteria at all and make educated business based decisions on which clubs should be based where.

http://www.triplem.com.au/sydney/sp...y-bears-linked-to-gold-coast-titans-takeover/

A year after the financially-stricken club were taken over by the NRL, the Titans have been linked to a takeover bid from the North Sydney Bears - who last played in the NRL in 1999 - while former saviour Darryl Kelly is also reported to be considering a buyback plan.

Annesley believes the rumours show the club has become a valuable asset and he wouldn't be surprised if there were several potential owners contemplating a bid.

According to Rugby league week’s The Mole, the fomer North Sydney now Central Coast-based rugby league club could return to the NRL via the Titans, where there are reportedly considering buying out the struggling Gold Coast franchise.

“Officials are remaining tight-lipped about the takeover but top secret moves are underway behind the scenes,” reported RLW.

“The Titans will remain as they are for this season, but could well be known as the Gold Coast Bears by next season.”

The Bears already have a stake on the Gold Coast, with the North Sydney club owning Seagulls Leagues Club in Tweed Heads.

It’s been no secret that Central Coast Bears boss and former North Sydney rugby league legend Greg Florimo has been busting his balls, trying to get the club back into the comp since they were kicked out in 1999 - (they briefly joined arch rivals Manly to form the Northern Eagles but that folded in 2002.

Over the last couple of seasons, the NRL world has been abuzz with rumours of expansion for the league, with bids coming in from as far afield as Perth, Papua New Guinea and New Zealand, not to mention the hard-working Central Coast Bears.

“The Bears have been for the last four or five years so pumped up to get their team back in,” Florimo told the Triple M Grill Team in 2012.

Everything old is new again.

Probably be better off calling them the South Queensland or Brisbane Bears though.
