Eel can put feelers out but Grothe wants to stay

WINGER Eric Grothe will attempt to dig his heels in at Parramatta even though the Eels are prepared to cut ties with one of the club's most famous names.
Grothe's manager, Roy Spagnolo, said last night his client, who has been given permission to negotiate with other clubs, was happy staying at the Eels and wanted to "fight his way back" into first grade.
"At this stage, he's not going anywhere," Spagnolo said. "He's happy to stay where he is."
It is believed the Eels inquired about whether Grothe, who has two more years remaining on his current deal with the club, would be prepared to move after a column item appeared in a magazine linking him with English giants Wigan.
Grothe, the 28-year-old son of the legendary Parramatta winger of the same name, was dropped from first grade in June to feeder side Wentworthville but has been sidelined with a back injury.
"There's been no real discussion," Spagnolo said. "It was just an inquiry from them. No one's really sat down and spoken to Eric. It's just been in passing. But he's committed to staying where he is and he's ready to fight his way back."
Parramatta chief executive Denis Fitzgerald said the club would honour Grothe's contract should he stay firm.
"We've given him permission to talk to other clubs," Fitzgerald said. "Nothing's changed. If he can't find another club he's with us."
Former Eels centre Mick Cronin, a teammate of Eric snr, encouraged Grothe to attempt a return.
Asked about the prospect of Grothe being cut by the club, Cronin said: "It would be sad to see it happen, but it's the nature of the beast, isn't it?
"I would gather it's not something the club particularly wants to do. His father has got a big history. But I hope he comes back and tries to prove a point. There's no doubt there's talent there."
Meanwhile, Mathew Head is edging closer to a remarkable return to St George Illawarra after the Dragons confirmed their interest in the halfback.
Head is believed to have already told Wests Tigers officials that he will be leaving the club at the end of the season for the Dragons. Head played with the Dragons for five seasons, but his time there was marred by a succession of injury problems. He is almost certain to have played his last game for the Tigers even if the club is able to grab an unlikely finals berth.
North Queensland yesterday signed Melbourne prop Antonio Kaufusi to a three-year deal. The former Queensland and Australian representative was contracted to the Storm until the end of next season, but was told he was free to negotiate, and the Bundaberg product opted for a return to his home state.
Manly coach Des Hasler has pencilled in injured five-eighth Jamie Lyon to return in the final round. The former representative star suffered medial ligament damage in the round-19 win over Parramatta at Brookvale Oval.
Lyon's defence and his playmaking ability have been missed, with Manly losing three out of four games while he has been out.
"Jamie's coming along well," Hasler said yesterday. "He's started running again. He's no hope of playing this weekend and we're not looking at him for the following round.
"We've always had the last-round game against Penrith as the aim and because his recovery has been good it's set to turn out that way now."
Barring injuries to other regulars between now and the finals and factoring in Lyon's anticipated return, the Sea Eagles could go into the finals with a full squad for Hasler to consider.

All you haters are a bit quiet now eh?

I can't believe the Drags are thinking about Mathew Head. Move forward! Obviously Benny sees something in him.

No one can tell me that Williams is a better option. He should have been back weeks ago, before he stuffed his back at Wenty.

His attacking options have been as good as grothes and his defence is a lot better....Sorry but Grothes time as a first grade footballer are over...

No actually, positionally in attack, Grothe sh*ts all over him. Williams stands flat footed out wide and relies only on his leg drive, which has cost him some tries, where as Grothe is a bit better positionally, and will hit the ball at speed. So no, his options are worse than Grothe's.

And his defence a lot better? Please.

Same number8. Williams will be good in the second row but not on the wing. Some people just can't admit his flaws or give up on their dream for him to be the next big thing.... However, it ain't gonna happen out on the wing!

I have no issue with Eric staying, maybe this will be a kick in the pants for him to concentrate more on footy.

I also don't think the club has done anything wrong either by giving him permission to negotiate if he wants.

The official stats would seem to contradict you, i know people will say that stats dont tell the whole story but they do show that Williams is the statistically superior winger this season.

Grothe has played 10 games this season to Williams 9 games, and Williams has having played 1 less game than Grothe has the superior stats in every category.

http://www.nrl.com/Stats/Player/tabid/10253/default.aspx

Williams made more meters than Grothe
less errors
more tackle breaks
less missed tackles
and the same amount of line breaks.

The kid is getting the job done better than Grothe! and he aint even a winger...

Grothe >>>> Williams. Williams is too big and slow to be a winger, and we're BLOODING HIM FOR MANLY FFS!!!!! End of story really.

And although the point is rather moot at the moment...Grothe's problem was the defensive pattern the team chose to adopt, the same problem we've consistently had down the right since his dropping. As soon as dropping him didn't solve it, Williams should have been banished to oblivion and Grothe brought back in. Williams may make marginally more metres and miss marginally fewer tackles, but Eric has an uncanny knack for finding the line and would have scored a heap of tries that both Tautai and Williams didn't. On top of that, a vast majority of Williams metres come from kick returns. More often than not he goes MIA when we're bringing it out from our own end, where Grothe gets into dummy half twice and drags us 10 or 15 metres upfield. Grothe is much more reliable when catching the ball as well....Williams can't seem to get off the ground and has been found out consistently, starting with the Sharks and continuing to his drop in the in goal on Saturday. Not to mention he was outleaped by Matt Utai!!

The fact is that in his debut season a rookie who isnt even a winger has outplayed a veteran winger who has represented both state and country!

The stats are plain to see...

The stats mean very little. There's far too much they don't take into account. Williams is an utterly woeful winger, who we are inexplicably blooding for a rival club and that's really all there is to it no matter how many metres he makes...and he has played worse than Grothe

 what a load of sh*t!

For starters, the stats had very little to do with Eric being dropped.... Do the 'stats' give you defensive lapses etc etc??

Once Eric was dropped, it was plain to see that, while he does have defensive problems to work on, the whole defensive line was struggling on that edge, including the golden boy, Tony Williams.

I'm not saying that Williams won't make the cut in FG, however, take your goggles off and look at some of the stupid errors/bad judgement he's made whilst being forced to play wing, and you realise that Grothe isn't such a bad option after all.

But it's OK, there are the Eric haters who would love to see the back of him, despite whether or not he played himself back into good form.... And the pattern just sees them constantly sticking up for the reserve grader who took his place, regardless of how it's effecting the result of the game. Clearly, you're one of those. You'd rather see a Manly bound Second Rower play wing instead of giving a guy who's been dropped to work on his game (and who'll actually be here for another 2 years) the benefit of the doubt.

ok so facts mean nothing...

and the fact that you say that Grothe has played better means everything

So, by extension..Williams is a better winger because he's made 47 more metres all year?:lol: That's all your "facts" boil down to...nothing more, nothing less. He's made less errors because he touches the ball less (12 runs to Grothe, 11 to Williams), do your stats tell you that? In fact a few games ago, he touched the ball 3 times in a half of footy against the Knights IIRC. He's made the same amount of line breaks, so your "fact" is worthless. He's made less tackles and so he's missed less (Grothe averages 4.5 tackles with 2 missed, Williams 3.6 with 1.2 missed).

Got any more "facts"?

Face it...Williams is big, slow and immobile. He can't get off the ground, scores less tries, and makes howling errors. He's just as slow to turn as Grothe, makes exactly the same defensive errors (as does Tautai) and is less involved. The only thing he has over Grothe that is even statistically relevant is 47 metres in total
