Fiji rugby loss can be Fiji rugby league’s gain

The Fiji National Rugby League is really saddened by the Fiji Rugby Union’s decision to turn down a three year joint sponsorship offer by Vodafone/ Fiji Water. FNRL patron, Rajesh Singh said that if such offer comes up to them they are always ready to take it because it is for the benefit of local players who have a lot of passion for the game.
It is believed that FRU turned down more than $27million joint offer after signing on again with national sevens sponsors, Digicel.
“FNRL is ready to take up this bid if offered to us,” Singh said.
“If such offer is given to us, we are ready to take it up for the benefit of our players.
“This will be a major benefit for the players, local teams and most of all their different local clubs.”
Singh added the country has a lot of potentials for local players in rugby league and such sponsorship offer would boost the players’ morale.
“I am making an appeal to Vodafone and Fiji Water to assist in the sponsorship of local league and this way we would be able to produce more Jarryd Hayne and Noa Nadruku.”
He said if they were going to be offered such a large amount sponsorship from the two companies, they would build a Vodafone/ Fiji Water Stadium which will see more incomes generated into them and the sponsors as well.
“Local players have the talent but the main problem is the funding and sponsorship of local and overseas tournaments.
“We will be honoured if such an offer is granted to us.”
Meanwhile, Singh said that the local league is growing and such funding offered to them would see them touring Europe, England and other overseas tournaments, an exposure to the local players.

$27 million Fiji dollars is $15.8 million aus dollars.
If they had 5 million a year sponsership they could tempt Hayne, Civo and Tuquiri away from Australia and be a genuine 4th ranked side.

International RL really would be that much stronger if players that were eligible for more than 1 country didn't play for Australia, and to a lesser extent England and NZ.

Australia really wouldn't be weakened at all, England and NZ might be.

But countries like Fiji, Tonga, Somoa, Ireland, Scotland and Wales could really benefit.

or they could use the money to grow rugby league in fiji, produce their own players, have a semi-pro or pro league, help join a pacific league with png or even tempt fijian union players to switch, instead of wasting it on players who want to play for australia.

investing time, money and effort now and we will see the rewards in 10-15 years time, which should be the aim.

What's the air like up in that ivory tower?
Fiji water is not going to kick in money for a boost in 15 years.

:lol::lol: Not this old chesnut again. Who exactly would England be losing? Please name someone who has actually played for another nation as well as England and not just those Scottish/Welsh/Irish players who have said they would like to play for England but at this moment in time have never played for England.

Vodafone clears rugby $8m bid
9/22/2009

Vodafone Fiji Limited yesterday clarified that they did offer Fiji Rugby Union sponsorship worth more than $8 million in cash and kind per year for three years....

...In Vodafone’s offer they had breakdowns to various levels of rugby ensuring that everyone would benefit, he said.
Their offer included $1.2 million each a year for the national sevens and Flying Fijians, $200,000 for Provincial competitions, $50,000 for the Island Zone, and $25,000 each for the U18, U19 and U21.
In addition all the 14 provincial unions would get $25,000 a year each for preparation and $125,000 to be used for coaching clinics and development of rugby in rural and outlying Islands.
They also would give the opportunity for unions to partner with them for texting promotions to raise funds for each union, he said.

Wouldn't it be nice if FNRL could secure just half of that!

Vodafone Manager Corporate Affairs Shailendra Prasad revealed they approached Rugby House in March about their intention to offer sponsorship of Fiji rugby. However, he said they were advised that the current sponsors do not allow Fiji Rugby Union to engage in any discussion with another party. “We were advised to hold out offer till the end of August/September period by when the current sponsorship agreement would expire and new bids will be called in,” he said.

So they did not knock them back at all !. Can RL not go out and get their own sponsors instead of begging in the media ?.
