Food for thought from a rival coach

f**k due respect, I'll come right out and say it: Trent Robinson is the most overrated coach in the league. He's built his reputation on a kissed-on-the-dick first year premiership with SBW, Maloney and Minichello in the same team. He then hasn't gotten his team to perform consistently in the last three seasons (even coming 15th in 2016) and has made bizarre personnel changes like cutting Maloney and paying Nikorima $350k/season. He hasn't been able to control his players off the field ie Pearce and the dog. He's been dining out on his 2013 premiership for three years and now he's got Cronk and Tedesco. If they don't win the comp he'll be out on his arse faster than if Robbie Farah was in his team.

Good point about Trent Robinson and 2013. He also had Micheal Jennings drop into his lap that year. Since then he's not much better that Mary. Well maybe a bit better.

He also got Luke O'Donnell to stiffen up the middle and provide the kind of aggro that only a legitimately crazy person can.

He certainly is blessed to be at a club that has no problem recruiting who they want. I totally agree that he has to be under pressure if he can’t deliver the premiership. I don’t think they will because they lack a front row capable of tearing sides apart - case in point was their semi vs. Cowboys and also JWH not playing well for the Kiwis.

Robinson is my most hated coach. Anzac day accusing aitken of lying down and essentially accusing dragons of cheating. Why? Because we beat them.
Hate Robinson. If he can't win a comp with his roster next year he should walk away from the game all together.

I can see it going like this , if he bombs out again they will get the cheque book out and Nicky will be be waving it in front of Bennett he will take it that's his go . Bennett will have a team full of over the cap players and they win the comp . Good on ya Nicky and the cheque book .

Many of our options in the backs do offer a point of difference, but the balance has been completely f**ked for years.

For example - Lafai has shown a very good ability to draw and pass or offload in traffic, yet they stick the slowest winger in the comp outside of him, nullifying many of the opportunities he creates.
Nene offers size and a good vertical leap, yet they stick him on the right side of the field, away from our main kicker and main point of difference.
Aitken offers brute strength but struggles in defence and ball skills, so they put him outside the least skillful half in the comp.
Mann offers natural footy instincts and game smarts, yet he's confined to the bench for 70+ minutes a game and torn between several different positions to cover concerns.

And so on. The problem isn't over/under utilisation of a skillset across our backline. It's the moron in the coaches box that doesnt know how to work combinations, strategy or game plans. That's always been the problem, and shuffling the players isnt going to help it.

Exactly Benny - no strategy or game plans.
Just watched a replay of the Twickenham match and the LINESPEED of the Pommies was incredible for the full 80 minutes - making the Dragons look like a bunch of slugs in comparison.
In fact no NRL team would've matched the speed and determination of the English defence. Eddie is a coach with a game plan and strategies that adapt during the game - WTF it makes us look like park footballers.
Nevertheless we we dudded by a novice Kiwi ref, just as poor ref decisions in a few games cost the Dragons a semi spot IMO.
Yeah Flo won't be quick enough to take advantage of Hunt's kicking game
Need Mann & Field/Lomax on the wings as they can make tries from nothing

I reckon he'd achieve similar results to Mary if their places were reversed tbh
All hypothetical, but I disagree. Especially when it comes to 2016 - one of Robinsons strong points is his ability to delegate and utilise his assistants. He attributes huge portions of his 2013 premiership to the attacking and defensive coaching of Jason Taylor and Craig Fitzgibbon respectively. If he had Demetriou in his corner, I can't see us coming in as low as we did based on Demetriou having some input.

Likewise, no matter what players he had at his disposal I can't see Mary winning 3 minor premierships, rebuilding for a year and then heading back to 2nd on the ladder given his inability to rely on assistants, utilise a bench or bring young talent through. I could imagine SBW playing as a middle forward, RTS languishing in reserve grade because he 'isn't ready' and Guerra sitting on the bench for 70 minutes a game.

Again, all hypothetical. However, all the crap about 'look at the players he's got' can be applied to literally any coach who's ever had success. Robinson was dealt a good hand at the Roosters but plenty of coaches have been in the position and failed to capitalise. He may only have 1 premiership next to his name but Roosters have been a powerhouse ever since he took the reigns. BUt of course, with the sour grapes that get thrown around in this place based on our sorry excuse for a coach, I cant see another decent coach getting much recognition...

And he was silent when Guerra said he milked the penalty against the Donkeys in the SF that helped Hodges get off at the judiciary. Double standards.

The Roosters have always been a powerhouse. They lost to us in a grand final four years before he took over. They've won 13 premierships and been runners up 15 times. If you point at any year in the history of Australian rugby league, there's a 1 in 4 chance that the Roosters competed in the grand final that year. To say that Trent Robinson is not responsible at all is absurd but he's underachieved massively in the last three years with the roster he has.

I'm also inherently suspicious of a guy who rated Jason Taylor lol

And the year before we beat them in the final, they won the spoon. In the 2 years before Robinson came on board they came 11th and 13th.

As for the last 3 years, underachieved? He won a minor premiership and came in 2nd within those years, and he sure as shit didn't have the 2nd strongest team in the comp! If that's underachieving, it makes what majority of other teams are doing pretty scary!!!

And rating Jason Taylor is a tricky one, the guy clearly has a great footy brain but struggles in getting his message across. Makes for a brilliant assistant and the fact that Robinson can use such a guy is a testament to his management and leadership skills.

Jason Taylor is a brilliant football mind inside a conniving little shit that you just know is talking about you behind your back.

The Roosters have the most naturally talented squad in the NRL except maybe the Panthers and Cowboys. They have openly expressed their disappointment with their finishes in recent seasons. So yeah, they've underachieved.

In this particular case, I think they have underachieved. Same way Dragons did under Brown.

Minor premiership counts for nought if you're subsequently knocked out by underdog.

Lol every team that didnt win the premiership should be openly admitting that they are disappointed with where they finish! Except Dragons, apparently, because scraping into the finals in 2015 is enough success to last a while...
