Hulk, Dani Alves to miss Brazil's Socceroos showdown

By Goal Australia

Two of Luiz Felipe Scolari's stars are sidelined for the high-profile friendly, but the visitors still face a tough task to return from Brasilia with a positive result

The Socceroos have been handed a boost ahead of their friendly against Brazil on Saturday, with Selecao stars Dani Alves and Hulk ruled out of the game through injury.

Both players travelled to South America from Spain and Russia respectively to be examined by the national team's medical staff, but will not play any part in the match against Australia or Brazil's clash with Portugal on September 10.

A statement on the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) website confirmed Barcelona's attacking fullback Alves is suffering from knee tendonitis, while Zenit St Petersburg striker Hulk has a thigh problem.

Former Internazionale and Manchester City fullback Maicon, now with Roma, is likely to come into the starting XI at right-back.

Atletico Mineiro's Marcos Rocha has been called into the squad as Hulk's replacement, while coach Luiz Felipe Scolari also has Neymar, Jo, Alexandre Pato and Lucas Moura to choose from in attack.

The Socceroos have lost star forward Tim Cahill from their squad due to an ankle injury, with Football Federation Australia confirming Holger Osieck - as of Wednesday (AEST) - has not called up a replacement.

The match between Australia and Brazil will be played at Estadio Nacional Mane Garrincha in the capital Brasilia.

Hopefully some of the youngsters McGowan, Rogic & Holland can get some game time. Although it's a foregone conclusion that Osieck will play the same old faces next year for the 3 matches we have, it's important to ensure that at least 8 - 10 of the young guys who he won't use at all become regular faces int he lead up to the Asian cup at home, and getting them involved against top class opposition can't hurt.

But he'll probably just play the same old boys, bomb it forward and hope.

I can't imagine anything else but a thrashing I'm afraid. So many of our boys are either warming timber or injured, and we would be stretched to the limit keeping it respectable at full strength.

This is rumoured to be the starting xi from the Brazilian press.

Júlio César; Maicon, Thiago Silva, David Luiz, Marcelo; Luiz Gustavo, Paulinho, Ramires, Oscar; Neymar, Jô.

We look like shit. Attack looks disgraceful, some awful balls from Holman & Jedinak, the defensive line looks like four blokes who just met each other at kickoff. Brazil are cruising and could easily put 5 on us in the 2nd half if it carries on this way.

At least if they just looked like they wanted to be there and enjoyed the experience of playing against Brazil in Brazil they could gain something out of it, but at the moment it looks like 11 fellas who'd rather be back at the hotel by the pool.

Hopefully the 2nd half is better!

I think at half time we should make one change, Osieck to be replaced by a competent manager.

If we take that team, that style and that attitude to Brazil next year, we'll lose every group match by 3 - 4 goals.

A good wake up call for everyone who thought we were killing it because we beat Iraq and a few other Asian teams to fall into the world cup. The worst part was that Archie Thompson almost looked our best player when he came on! Not good.

This was coming. We struggled big time in qualifying and have been put to the sword here in embarrassing fashion. I fear next year will be three games of the 2010 Germany performance.

No excuse for poor team selection and defending like statues at the back.

I love how everytime Luca$h is solely responsible for conceding a goal he looks around with his arms outstretched as if to ask which of his teammates didn't do their job. Prick should've been gone after Durban.

And all that sitting on his arse has diminished Schwarzer's reflexes. Bring in Ryan who's actually playing, and playing well.

Sack Holger and bring in Bielsa to save a bit of pride next year.

There is no shame in losing to Brazil.

We should be ashamed of the way we lost though. Absolutely inept and embarrassing. A World Cup side should not be losing 6-0 to any team in the world.
