Frontrunners at half way mark

Every time I have watched the Melbourne Cup, the horse that was 1st place halfway through the race ends up coming last. Who don't the jockeys see that pattern and don't start too hard?

Mr Celebrity pulled. Simple as that. If he didn't, then it was the worst ride ever considering the horse likes to sit back in the field. That is part of why the leader at halfway often drops away in the cup, is that they overrace early, and then don't have the staying ability to run out a strong 3200
