Listening to Gus's podcast released today...

The coach thing played out exactly how he envisioned

The board sacked Griffin not him.

It was his job to manage the problems started by others.

The sun shines out of Nathan's arse and gee he comes from a good family.

John Hopoate receives 10-year rugby league ban

FORMER NRL star John Hopoate has been banned from all involvement in rugby league for 10 years for his latest brain snap.

JOHN Hopoate has been banned from any involvement in rugby league for 10 years for a fight in a Manly A-Grade match last month which he claims was sparked by vile racial taunts.

Hopoate fronted the NSW Rugby League conduct review panel on Wednesday night after pleading guilty to three counts of contrary conduct and one of striking just minutes after coming off the bench while filling in for Narraweena Hawks against Forestville Ferrets.

The ban sees him rubbed out immediately for five years, before another five are suspended with Hopoate required to apply for any role he wishes to fill in that time.

Under the facts read out to Hopoate, it was claimed he threatened to “smash” an opposition trainer, told a Forestville official to “f*** off” and said to an opposing player while standing behind the bench: “You’re dead, I’m going to smash you, you dog.”

But in a tense 20-minute hearing in which the former Manly and Wests Tigers winger unsuccessfully asked media to leave the room, he claimed he’d only been provoked by the opposing player before the incident.

“No one gets angry for no reason … I was called a ‘f***king black monkey’ and I didn’t like it so I threatened to bash him and I’d do it again,” Hopoate told the panel.

The former NSW and Kangaroos representative also claimed he was before the panel because of his reputation.

But when asked why he didn’t report the racial slurs to match officials at the time, he said it was because he “wasn’t a b****”.

“I was too angry to say it because all I wanted to do was slap the guy who was being a smart arse,” he said. “It’s unacceptable (behaviour) but are we going to let these people get away with racism?

“I’d do the same thing here if someone called me a f***ing black monkey.”

Hopoate apologised for the incident in which he accepted he’d carried on like “a friggin’ mug”, and also brought with him letters from an under-16s Cromer Kingfishers girls’ team which he coaches.

Panel chairman John Walford told the 44-year-old he should have reported the racial taunts to match officials, and said he gave them little weight when considering the sentence as they had not been relayed to the referee. He also claimed the incident wasn’t isolated and took into account Hopoate’s past indiscretions, which include 45 weeks of NRL suspensions and other local matters.

NSWRL chief executive David Trodden said it was important the matter was dealt with.

“Incidents like these, which challenge that safe and enjoyable environment and damage the reputation of our sport, have no place in our game and must be dealt with appropriately to protect our game and the vast majority of participants who respect its rules,” he said.

After Hopoate was initially penalised for a high tackle, a fight ensured on the following play-the-ball after the Ferrets kicked for touch.

Hopoate was sent off as a result for landing a punch, before Fox Sports released footage of him threatening the opposition lock in an expletive-laced tirade.

The opposing player was also sin-binned for his role in the incident, which including throwing the ball at Hawks players.

Hopoate played for NSW and Australia in his 209-game NRL career, but also spent a record 45 weeks on the sideline suspended.

His most famous indiscretion came when he was banned for 12 matches for poking opponents’ backsides while at the Tigers in 2001, while his NRL career was ended with a 17-game ban for a dangerous high hit on Cronulla’s Keith Galloway while at Manly in 2006.

Hopoate had a prior record in the Manly A-Grade competition which included being marched for throwing a punch while playing for Manly Cove in 2011.

On Maquarie Sports Radio this morning Piggy gave it to Ricky for 5 years of :poop:.

Glen Lazarus has called in defending him saying that the coach has done a wonderful job and has little control over the boneheaded decisions made by the players on the field.

I suspect you will see this reported soon in the 24/7 news cycle.

Mate, It was f**king bullshit. Those filthy Ferrets were calling me Mel Meninga. I told them who I really am but they just wouldn't have it and kept on with this Mel crap. Who the f**k is Mel anyway?
I gave them all the finger and told them if they didn't shut their holes then I would bash them. They still wouldn't stop so I had to bash one and threaten the rest with death. That's how we did it up the Cross where they used to call me Mel too. FFS, Whoever this Mel merkin is, I must be a dead ringer for him.

I’m sure Lazarus wouldn’t have any reason to stick up for Ricky, having played with him and everything.

It’s funny how there are people who will jump to his defence whenever anyone mentions Ricky’s poor record, but there is mostly silence when other coaches are copping the same.

Kent talks about the ‘circumstances’ that they have down in Canberra that Ricky has had to deal with.
What about all the circumstances coaches like Arthur, Kearney, Barrett and others have had to deal with?
Where was Kent to stick up for Henry, Elliot and Furner when they were going through these circumstances in Canberra?
