Rabbitohs Sign Matt King for 2012 and 2013, Shannan McPherson Heading to ESL at Season's End
29 Jun 2011

The South Sydney Rabbitohs are delighted to announce the signing of representative back Matt King for the 2012 and 2013 seasons.

King, 30, has played 170 first grade games for both the Melbourne Storm in the NRL and the Warrington Wolves in the English Super League, scoring over 100 tries in his nine-year career to date.

King has also played ten Tests for Australia, nine State of Origin matches for NSW and two games for Country Origin, as well as being selected in the inaugural ESL Exiles team which defeated England earlier this year.

Standing 190cm and weighing in at 100kg, King is one of the leading players in the English Super League competition today, and will return home to Australia over the next two years.

Rabbitohs CEO Shane Richardson is pleased to be bringing an experienced outside back to the Club.

“We’re really happy to be able to attract a player with the experience and talent that Matt King possesses to our Club for the next two years,” Mr Richardson said.

“Matt was one of the leading lights during Melbourne’s dominance of the competition, alongside players such as Greg Inglis and Michael Crocker, and also our new Head Coach in Michael Maguire.

“He has the runs on the board and we’re looking forward to welcoming Matt and his young family to South Sydney next season.”

The South Sydney Rabbitohs also announce that utility forward Shannan McPherson has sought a release from the remaining year of his contract with the Club and will be moving on at the end of the season to take up a long-term contract in the English Super League.

McPherson, a South Sydney junior, has played over 80 first grade games for the Rabbitohs in a first grade career which began in 2005.

McPherson approached the Club about gaining a release to take up the opportunity in the Super League, a request to which the Rabbitohs agreed.

Mr Richardson says Shannan will be missed at the Club

“It’s always tough when one of your juniors moves on but we wish Shannan the best of luck with his new adventure,” Mr Richardson said.

“He received an offer to head to the UK and felt it was a good time for him and his young family to experience a bit of the world and ply his trade overseas.

“He approached us about a release and we felt that we couldn’t stand in his way.

“He has been a great influence at our Club both on and off the field and we wish him and his family the best come season’s end.

“For the moment Shannan remains a Rabbitoh and he and the team will be doing everything they can to extend their season into the finals for the rest of this year.”

With all the players that have supposedly asked for a release then what sort of club is Richo running.
I'm not gullible enough to accept that crap.

I'm sorry, who are "all the players that have supposedly asked for a release"

Seems you're gullible enough to accept crap when it suits your (well worn) agenda.

Great, we don't need to recruit. Have great players in all positions. How is Souths team going?

I feel shannan left due to souths buying luke burgess. and with george coming through and sam moving to front row to accomadate sutton move to lock feel our depth in the forwards is strong as long as they stay fit.

I take is a compliment that supporters of other clubs need to troll Souths sites.

Despite their success and our lack of it for 40 years, others are still jealous.

We are South Sydney and you never will be.

We'll see next year then shall we? Souths are going well even without our stars. Beat broncos which you failed to do and beat eels which you failed to do. Oh we also beat cronulla which you failed to do. All without our star players. Would like to see dragons do that.. Then again Bennett would just whinge and say origin depletes your side and it's hard when you're without stars. Guess you'll always have your excuses and you'll always have some reason to poke your nose on the Souths board as you have nothing better to do with your life. Pity really. My dads a dragons supporter and I will always have a soft spot for them but what I don't have a soft spot for is drongos like you and muzby who make the good Dragons supporters look bad. Stay on your own board and prove you have better things to do than stir sh!t for absolutely no reason. Unless you'd like to admit that no, you really dot have a life and this is indeed the highlight of your day
