Injuries to senior forwards Neville Costigan and Dan Tolar could prompt Knights coach Rick Stone to unleash imposing debutant Zane Tetevano against Cronulla at Toyota Stadium tomorrow.
Costigan (knee) and Tolar (Achilles) could not complete training yesterday and Stone admitted both were in doubt.
Their absence could provide the opportunity Tetevano has been awaiting since he joined the Knights in 2009 as a New Zealand under-16 representative.
After two impressive years in Newcastle’s National Youth Competition (under 20s) side, the towering 20-year-old has been playing for the Central Coast Centurions this season in the NSW Cup.
He trained with the NRL squad yesterday and Stone confirmed he was one of ‘‘a couple of players’’ on standby for Tolar and Costigan.
‘‘He’s going to be a consideration, for sure,’’ Stone said yesterday. ‘‘Zane’s been pretty good for us all year.
‘‘He hasn’t played NRL at the moment but he’s definitely shown he’s got plenty of spring in his step. His form in the last month to six weeks has been really good.
‘‘He’s been knocking on the door, and he’s been our 18th man a few times, so if he gets a chance, I’m confident he’ll do a good job.’’
If Tetevano plays, he will be the sixth Newcastle player to make his NRL debut this season, after Beau Henry, Tyrone Roberts, Marvin Filipo, Peter Matau’tia and Ryan Stig.
Tetevano is capable of handling the roles of second row and prop, and at 187 centimetres and 107 kilograms he appears physically ready to make an impact in the NRL.
‘‘He’s got the tools there,’’ Stone said. ‘‘Concentration is a big thing for Zane ... but he well and truly deserves his chances if he gets a go this weekend.’’
Stone said there was ‘‘a fairly significant question mark’’ over Costigan or Tolar playing.
Veteran Adam MacDougall (knee) trained lightly yesterday but is set to miss his second consecutive match.
‘‘I don’t think he’ll be playing this weekend,’’ Stone said.
Inspirational skipper Paul Gallen (calf) is in doubt for the Sharks.
Wes Naiqama had scans yesterday on his torn triceps muscle and was expected to learn the extent of the injury today.
