Coaches Corner - Round 20

Saturday nights win at Toyota Park was a historical victory for our club. It was the first time the Newcastle Knights have kept an opponent scoreless away from home.
Shark Park can be a cold and lonely stadium at the best of times but to make the return trip up the F3 with two competition points was extremely satisfying.
So often in football, the efforts of our most important players go unnoticed.
I would like to dedicate this weeks column to Matt Hilder and let you in on a coachs perspective of a player who is crucial to the success of our football team.
The great work of our Captain, Kurt Gidley or half back, Jarrod Mullen is noticed week in, week out. Kurt and Jarrod call the shots and when they inject themselves into the action the cameras are firmly focussed on them. As playmakers, they are naturally the centre of attention and most of their work is done in the spotlight.
Supporters naturally watch their every move, anticipating that something special is about to happen every time they get their hands on the ball.
But while every team needs a brilliant half back or fullback, every team also needs a Matt Hilder.
Matty has the ability to play hooker, lock, half back or five-eighth. He can play 80 minutes or start from the bench. He can take on a defenders role and top the tackle count or inject his enthusiasm to support play and create opportunities as another playmaking option.
We just need to look at the statistics to see the impact he had on Saturday night.
Coming off the bench, Matty played 57 minutes, making a team best 157 metres from 18 carries. He made 26 tackles, four tackle breaks, one line break, scored a try and was equal third on the tackle count with Chris Houston (26) behind Isaac De Gois (40) and Cameron Ciraldo (38).
But what the official statistics dont show is Mattys toughness, consistency and off the ball efforts including kick pressures and defensive work through the middle of the ruck.
I was worried about Matt leading into Saturday nights game. He missed the previous week against Manly due to a virus and wasnt able to train until late in the week. He lost a lot of weight as a result of his illness but being the true professional he is, Matty knew exactly what he had to do to prepare for the occasion.
Put simply, Matt represents the standards our foundation team set back in 1988 he is the player other players want to play beside.
I look forward to seeing you at Ausgrid Stadium this Sunday when we host the Titans.
While youre there, keep an eye on Matt Hilder. Im keen to hear your thoughts.
