Yeah, Cartwright is the easy counterargument to RCG in terms of player development. You can’t say Griffin has affected one and not the other - even though it IS possible, for example Cartwright could be lazy af and ignoring everything Griffin says, there is no way to know this from end results. Instead, I prefer to focus on things we can see, such as team selections and in-game tactics/substitutions... and those are the main reasons I don’t rate Griffin.

Well said. Players are people, their own attitude and willingness to work hard is a massive factor in their own development. I agree with Mx in regards to RCG, he was always going to get to this level because he is a big athletic guy with the right attitude. Maybe hook helped it along, maybe he didn't. Moving him to the bench for a couple weeks seemed to help. Dylan Edwards is another one who just has the right attitude, he will usually always find a way to get better.

Its the guys who don't have the right attitude or aren't naturally hard workers where we will see what the coach is made of, Guys like Carty, Seggy, and dare I say Moylan. A good coach like Bellamy gets these guys to work hard and improves them, hook hasn't shown that ability yet.

In my opinion Blake has improved immensely as an individual player. The attacking structures to use him are what's wrong.

Maybe you are right but either way he was a non factor for most of the year. His defence improved but if he isn't getting the ball he's not doing much.

Carty wasnt allowed to focus on developing in a position. Thats on Hook

Listen to any player from the storm talk about why Bellamy is such a good coach they almost 100 percent of the time start with "hes gives you a simple role to do and everyone knows what that role is" Hook literally does the opposite of this. He had Moylan doing the playmaking from fb with TMM playing in the halves but running support lines like a FB and carty out there doing god knows what. Like what is Cartys role in this team? Ive probably seen all of his nrl games and I still don't know.

If you want to credit him for every good thing then he gets faulted for all the bad. Latu went backwards under hook. So did Moylan. So did Seggy. Waqa blake didn't progress, he barely go the ball last year. That's all hooks fault. Besides tearing up the Warriors once Cleary is still same player. We can go through the whole squad, there aren't many who are really progressing like RCG is(like they should be). All hooks fault. I mean Kikau couldn't even hold a spot on the bench, hooks fault. Shit throw Carty in there too, the guy has completely stalled or gone backwards the last two years, he looks like he has no f**king idea what his role is, guess whos fault that is????
Of course he gets credited with the bad too. That's the point. But what MxLegend says is illogical. If RCG's selection is all down to him, but Carty's poor season is all down to Hook. Hook has brought through a few players and is showing signs that he has faith in our juniors. They seem to cope when they come in, so he is doing something right and RCG's selection, which came after an extended spell on the bench, Hook's idea, reflects well on Hook.

We don't need to now go on for several posts about Hook's mistakes, he has plenty, but credit where credit's due.

James Maloney joins Panthers

http://www.penrithpanthers.com.au/news/2017/12/04/james_maloney_joins_.html

Penrith Panthers is delighted to confirm the signing of representative playmaker James Maloney until at least the end of the 2020 season.

The 31-year-old has achieved 203 NRL appearances along with nine State of Origin games for NSW and four Tests for the Kangaroos.

"Panthers has the roster and the resources to achieve success over the coming years and I’m really excited to now be part of that," Maloney said.

"The squad has a strong forward pack for me to play behind, plus some young and talented players coming through in the outside backs."

After making his NRL debut for Melbourne in 2009, Maloney joined New Zealand Warriors and led them to the NRL Grand Final in 2011.

It was during his stint in Auckland that Maloney first met current Panthers halfback Nathan Cleary.

"I've actually known Nathan for a long time because he was my ballboy at the Warriors," Maloney said.

"I'm looking forward to playing alongside him and hopefully helping him take his game to the next level."

Success followed Maloney to Sydney Roosters, where he won the premiership in 2013, and three years later he guided Cronulla Sharks to the club's first-ever premiership title.

"James Maloney is an exciting acquisition for Panthers," Panthers Executive General Manager Phil Gould AM said.

"He has regularly succeeded at the highest levels of our game and brings a wealth of experience.

"It's a real vote of confidence in the potential of our club that James has chosen to play with Panthers.

"We are truly delighted to welcome him to Penrith."

Maloney will commence pre-season training with Panthers in January.

A more simplistic way to look at it is also (2017)

Moylan - personal off field issues
Cartwright - personal off field issues
Merrin - personal off field issues
Mansour - Major injury
Whare - Major injury
Wallace - playing busted

That's a third of our team right there.

Can hardly blame the coach for the above. Carty's issues were well published and no matter who the coach was (is) he was never going to have a good season. At the end of the day we still made the semis, albeit on the back of a heap of rookies stepping up.

Griffin may not be every ones cup of tea but he did get "an" end result, if not the one we were all hoping for.

Carty was going backwards before his issues this year. Hook had him wasting time in the in 2016. Having 5 or 6 guys with serious injuries over a season is not unusual at all, it would be a good season for most teams.

Griffin is bog average at best, there aren't any arguments that say otherwise.

A lot of that preparation was done by Brennan. Let's see what happens now we don't have him.

Yep a lot of that work was done by others. Hook arrived here at a time that we had a bumper crop of juniors ready to hit first grade. He deserves some credit for sure but there are a lot of those juniors stagnating imo. Once they hit FG at 18,19 and 20 they aren't complete players, they need a lot of polish and they are not getting that imo.

How is it illogical?

RCG has had to focus on being a front rower. Nothing else. Bench. Starting. His job is simple and doesnt change.

Cartwright was a second rower. Then our 6. Then a second rower again. Then our 6. Then a benchie with no real role in the team. No one knows what his role is. Even at 6 he wasn't actually playmaking. Moylan was.

The coach hasnt helped develop RCG. He just hasnt f**ked him around. Cartwright on the other hand has not been allowed to simply develop.
