Better than nothing though considering he’d never play FG. There’s no doubt we’d be footing a bit of his UK contract. Would be helpful to upgrade the likes of Best and Gamble.

My fear is that we’ll use it to throw a bigger contract at Oates and this time next year when he’s injured we’ll be trying to get out of it.

The Oates talk disappoints me. He is cooked.

Keao Weekes is available.

You dont play Rugby 7s without being fast. Im astounded his speed is in question tbh

2nd highlight here has him reeling in Edrick Lee pretty quickly. Not sure how anyone can suggest Miller is slow

That’s Edrick after a debilitating, almost career ending foot injury, not Edrick from 5 or 6 years ago.

Miller is quick off the mark and agile but his speed over longer distances was found out a couple of times in first grade. He’s not slow but relative to other outside backs he's probably middle of the pack.

This, i think the thing is Miller is a player who likes to get his hands on the ball, likes to crab and look for gaps in the line, the way we play you need your wingers to hold their width and be in position to receive the ball

Good on him. He cops a lot of shit, but he’s filled a difficult role in the team.

He’s in his 5th season at the club, and he has never had the opportunity to put more than a dozen games together in the one position. If he makes it through the last two games and into the finals as a bench utility, it will be his longest stretch in the one position.

Good team man, good competitor, but “specialist utilities” just don’t add much at all. I want two specialist hookers in the team. I think the game is getting so fast now that the 80 minute hooker is going to get rarer and rarer, to the point where you’re better off splitting the minutes between two mid hookers than giving all 80 to a good 80 minute hooker. Even Harry Grant doesn’t play the full 80 every week. For me it’s pretty simple as to who should be the 14 next year - Phoenix Crossland.

I think everyone here would agree with you. The only people who don't is because they think it should be:

9. Crossland
14. Brailey

Kurt has made some good contributions during our recent run of form but I’m not upset that we’re letting him go. The fact that he hasn’t ever been able to nail down a proper spot tells you what you need to know. For the record I think that roaming middle role that he sort of plays for us at the moment is probably the best fit for him but I can see why he’s always the guy who gets asked to play out of position, in fairness to him I think he does ok at that, better than most probably would but he’s just never been quite good enough at any of those positions to be a regular starter. The fact that he’s played fullback, wing, centre, 5/8, halfback, hooker and lock since he came to the club is pretty crazy. There wouldn’t be many guys in the league who’ve been asked to do that. Maybe you could argue that he’s been asked to do too much and has been poorly managed along the way.

Anyway, I’ll enjoy whatever positive contribution that Kurt can make over the coming weeks. I hope he gets a chance at another club.

We simply cannot carry multiple utilities in our cap. Mann has been a very solid and competent player for us. Crossland’s emergence has been a huge factor here too. No one saw it coming. Let’s be real. The club would be also acutely aware after Dom that KPP and Pryce are able to go to market Nov 1 next year and if we need to upgrade and extend them, we will need the money a guy like Mann would take up. It can a matter of one player contract that can cause you to lose so much.

I think Oates would have been good but yeah no point in throwing big money at him when we supposedly couldn’t match the Roosters’ offer for Dom, who is a younger, better version with way more tomorrows.

Interesting on Dom: was speaking with my old man who has a role within the Newcastle comp so knows a fair few staffers at the Knights. Apparently Dom’s Roosters contract is massive: only a bit more than the Knights in terms of $$$ but includes return business class flights for his whole family + accommodation to come out and visit twice per year, property and car and apparently clauses for more $ if the cap changes.

We were no chance. The salary cap evens out the playing field my ass. Everyone still on SM calling for him to back out of the deal need to get over it, he’d never back out of that.

I remember an opposition player running over 50 metres and streaking away from Miller the longer the run went Ponga had a lot more distance to travel and he flew past Miller whilst attempting to catch the player. Millers top speed wasn't anything to rave about. This isn't the only example of him lacking pace, so fatigue can't be blamed.

Wasn’t it a prop or at least a fwd that was mentioned above that Miller was loosing ground to and Ponga ended up running him down as he crossed the try line
