New Bati for Mini Games
9/9/2009
21-23.gif
A totally new look Vodafone Fii Bati side would will take part in the Pacific Games later in the month. Mananger, Mesake Navugona yesterday said they have selected the new team because the Mini Games would coincide with the trials for the Pacific Cup. “We will be leaving on the September 27 and the trials are on September 30 and October 3.”
“So if we have the old players they would not have a chance to play in the trials.” Navugona said all the eastern and western conference players have been given their programs but they would march into camp on Monday next week to begin preparation as a team. “It is a blessing in disguise for us because this is a chance to get the new players to play at national level.”
Nabua Broncos and Fiji Bati Alipate Tani’s protégé Nemani Suguturaga are also in the Mini Games team. Suguturaga although a non-travelling reserve in the side travelled with them during the World Cup last year.
Navugona said Suguturaga’s chance of making the Pacific Squad team depends on the head coach, Joe Rabele to decide on having him in his team.
Navugona added although it would be a new look team, nothing is impossible and if the players do their part and play to their outmost best there is no question mark in getting the Gold medal.
“We can’t promise anything but if the players do their best then the chance of winning the gold is very good.”
Team:Kini Naovasi, Seremaia Waqamudu, Jone Yacadrau, Etuate Tagicakibau, Solomone Qetia, Nemani Suguturaga, Peni Botiki, Luke Osbourne, Petero Vueti, Waisale Tora, Seruvi Ralulu, Jovilisi Tawake.

Samoa Rugby League has kick off with this year Samoa Tel 7s series.

Yesterday confirmed the development of rugby league within Samoa, witnessing great talent and skills amongst players.
Teams who took part in the tournament included teams from Saints, Samoa Tel Invitation side, Village, Sharks, West Tigers, Steelers, Giants, Sarina, Firestone, Blackie, Roosters and Warriors
.

A presentation of prizes was also conducted yesterday for teams who reached 4th, 3rd, 2nd and of course the champions for the week.
Playing for 3rd and 4th places were Marist and Villages while Samoa Tel Invitation ad Sarina fought it out in the finals.

The Samoa Tel invitation side is the team that consists of players to represent Samoa at the Mini Games and Sarina were not deterred by it and gave it their best performance of the day. Players on the opposition proved why they were selected for the national team minimising all errors to come up on top.

Samoa Tel invitation side ended the game with a 14 – 4 win after a thrilling final.
Samoa Rugby League will continue with 7s next weekend at the Marist grounds Lotopa with the final leg on the 19th September.

The Toa Samoa league sevens team have had no time for sightseeing as they eye the gold medal for the league sevens competition.
Yesterday, the team of 12 players hit the Top Shape gym for their morning workout.
Team coach Freddy Tuilagi says his team of young players is definitely fit and ready for the competition.
He says that while only four teams will contest the competition, his team is not going to underestimate any team they face.
“It’s going to be a tough competition,” says Tuilagi.
“We’ve been training hard for a couple of months now and we are ready.”
Tuilagi is also very proud of the fact that his players are all home grown Samoan boys from the motherland.
The first day of the league competition is on Monday September 28 with the finals scheduled for Tuesday September 29.
Games will be played at the BCI stadium in Nikao and will include teams from the Cook Islands, Fiji, Samoa and Tonga.

League Lads Change their Look

The Cook Islands league team have something of a ‘rebel’ feel about them.
It could be the team’s black hooded uniforms or ‘jimmy’ moustaches which the players and management staff are sporting.
While the team jokingly call their facial hair Jimmy Marurai moustaches, I reckon some of them look like wrestling great incredible Hulk Hogan.
The local members of the league team assembled at the Telecom Sports Arena on Saturday for the Cook Islands flag raising ceremony.
Despite the heat, the team turned out in their black hooded skivvies in a show of unity.
Their uniforms were organised and bought for them by Australian based international rugby league coach and team all rounder (technical advisor, assistant coach, manager) Ina Konito.
Team coach Albert Nicholas says his boys are fit and confident heading into their Pacific Mini Games.
The league competition is scheduled for the last week of the games which Albert says is great because the team can polish up on their game.
Only four teams will contest the league competition medals.
The teams are from Fiji, Tonga, Samoa and the Cooks.
The majority of the team is made up of local players with three players yet to arrive from overseas.
The Cook Islands league team includes Piri Matapo, Mathew Pierre, Spoon Marsters, Bobby Hansen, Kevin Mapu, Clive Nicholas, Pene Trego, (overseas) Trent Poila, Fred Pakitoa and Sema Mataora.
The management team includes coach Albert Nicholas, managers Te Tupu (Lax) Pori and Ina Konito.

Well then the next questions should be if they are at the Games and RL is their national sport - why can't they muster 10 guys for a team?

Same applies to other Islands - Tokelau, Niue, Solomons, Norfolk, even New Caledonia

League ranked 3rd out 4
9/30/2009
blank_img.jpg
The Vodafone Fiji Bati was ranked third out of the four teams in the competition after they won a game, lost one and drew the last match against Samoa yesterday. National rugby league coach Semesa Cadrakilagi said they will pull up their socks in the semifinal clash against Tonga who beat them 24-20 earlier in the day.
Cadrakilagi said they would have to lift their game with the gold medal at stake today.
He said the side has the class to win the competition but did not bring out their best performance in the opening day.
He said they have a plan to counter the heavier Tongan side in the semis.
“We will work something around the ruck area. The Tongan players have been running straight at us and we will try to counter them in this area,” said Cadrakilagi.
“There are a few areas of concern which we worked on before the last game against Samoa and I think the side has improved in defence.
“It will be a different ball game tomorrow (today) with medals at stake.”
Fiji beat Cook Islands 24-18 in the first game before Tonga defeated them 24-20.
They managed to draw the final match against Samoa 20-20.
Fiji Bati was ranked in third place after the round robin competition and they will face second placed Tonga in the semi finals while number one seed Cook Islands tackles Samoa.
