Dylan Farrell actually played 5/8 last night after the late withdrawal of Mundine. I also think he was fatigued from Wed night

Agreed, that would be a great problem.

Vidot is a great centre, Low is a great winger.

If only the Raiders NYC team could see that though, I think they would play a lot better.

Didn't Brophy only score something like 3 or 4 tries in over 15 matches on the wing last season? I remember my mate telling me that, after giving Brophy massive wraps before the season started.

Just did a wingers analysis as well for the U20's this season. Again, the 'season' stats are up until last round, and I have added individually the players match stats for the current round that has just past. They are not included in the players season stats.

Kalifa Fai Fai Loa (Dragons NYC) – 13 games, 7 tries, 8 linebreaks, 1 linebreak assist, 0 try assists, 46 tackle breaks, average 14 runs for 133 metres

This round: 10 runs, 60 metres, 2 tackle breaks, 0 tries, 0 linebreaks

Bill Tupou (Warriors NYC) – 12 games, 12 tries, 11 linebreaks, 0 linebreak assists, 1 try assist, 41 tackle breaks, average 9 runs for 85 metres

This round: 11 runs, 75 metres, 2 tackle breaks, 0 tries, 0 linebreaks

Josh Jerome (Storm NYC) – 13 games (12 games at wing, the rest at five-eighth), 11 tries, 14 linebreaks (13 at wing), 2 linebreak assists, 4 try assists, 40 tackle breaks (37 at wing), average 9 runs for 82 metres (9 runs for 81 metres at wing)

This round: 7 runs, 48 metres, 1 tackle break, 0 tries, 0 linebreaks

Michael Fualalo (Panthers NYC) – 14 games, 11 tries (8 at wing), 11 linebreaks (8 at wing), 0 linebreak assists, 0 try assists, 36 tackle breaks (27 at wing), average 9 runs for 66 metres (8 runs for 63 metres at wing)

This round: DNP (bye)

Coedi Towney (Tigers NYC) – 8 games (7 at wing, the rest at centre), 2 tries, 9 linebreaks (7 at wing), 2 linebreak assists, 2 try assists (1 at wing), 56 tackle breaks (48 at wing), average 15 runs for 146 metres (16 runs for 148 metres at wing)

This round: 13 runs, 94 metres, 8 tackle breaks, 0 tries, 1 linebreak

*these stats are not accurate due to stats missing for the Rd 4 clash between Manly and Newcastle, in which these players participated in. It is still recorded whether they score a try, but everything else is considered as zero.

---

There are some very talented wingers going around too, as can be seen. A few teams have wingers who seem to have been persisted with even though they have shown very little in regards to linebreaking and tryscoring ability, but these individuals have consistently found the ability to break the line and score on repeated occasions throughout the season. I will give particular wraps to Towney and Fai Fai Loa for clearly having a tremendous workrate to go with their natural flair, 130+ metres each is no mean feat! Towney's season has been halted by an injury, however.

Regular winger tryscorers from last season like Mason Pure (Bulldogs), Sonny Tuigamala (Panthers), Kevin Gordon (Titans) have all moved up to NRL and feeder clubs (NSW or QLD Cup) due to the age bracket, while players like Obediah Geia (Cowboys) and Jharal Yow Yeh (Broncos) have had their 2nd NYC seasons interfered with by injuries, stunting their development and undoubtedly robbed them of a chance to once again feature prominently as some of NYC's best tryscorers. The aforementioned Mason Pure (who missed every game between Rd 5 to Rd 16 due to injury) and Thomas Ah Van (who missed all but one game between Rd 6 and Rd 18 due to injury) had injury-interrupted seasons too, but both once returning finished their seasons very strongly to remain among the better wingers.

Then there is the case of Drury Low (Raiders) who was outstanding on the wing for Raiders last season, outshining the better known Michael Brophy easily (who had quite a disappointing season IMO), but so far in this season, it seems his linebreaking ability has been limited by a shift to the centres and fullback (albeit, Low did score himself a hattrick in the centres against Sharks in Round 14, but the fact remains that 6 of his 10 linebreaks this season have come in his 3 appearances on the wing).

Just to continue on this, it is fair to say that over the two seasons, probably the most consistently effective wingers have been Joe Vickery and Bill Tupou, in both seasons, these blokes have remained relatively injury free, and score tries on a regular basis for their teams.

I am actually surprised that no NRL teams have picked up either of these players yet, especially with neither likely to get a run in FG for their current sides.

I just completed a Front Rower analysis for the NYC at this point in the season. Like all previous analysis's, the 'average' stats are based on Rounds 1-15, and do not include the Round 16 performance of the players. Those are stated separately, beneath each player, as 'Last Round'.

*these stats are distorted by the fact that NRL Stats have not recorded the statistics for the Round 4 clash between Manly and Knights

Sam McKendry (Panthers NYC) – 12 games, 2 tries, 3 linebreaks, 20 offloads, 36 tackle breaks, average 12 runs for 110 metres, average 22 tackles for 2 missed

Last round: DNP (injured)

------

Note that I did not mention NYC players who have been injured and thus played very few games (Martin Kennedy, Leeson Ah Mau, Aaron Woods), players who have more often than not played in the backrow or bench (Dunamis Lui, Pakosinasi Afu, Pulou Vaituutuu, Lama Tasi) or players who average less than 100m (Isaac Maliota, John Viiga, Thomas Hancock, Luke Laban, Brad Lupi, Josh Ailomai).

I have noticed that while Aiden Tolman, Josh McGuire, Eddy Pettybourne, Tim Mannah, and to a lesser extent John Kite, Tim Grant, Will Matthews and James Tamou, have all moved up to being regular first graders now, whilst 2008 standout props like Tohi Leha, Robert Worsely, Steve Darby, Matt Davidson, Mataupu Poching, Tim Robinson, Stanley Waqa, Louis Fanene and Nick Skinner are now floating around in QLD Cup or NSW Cup.

Russell Packer is still eligible for U20's, but has played out most of this season in the First Grade team, he is a step above the others, while Johnny Mannah seems to be playing First Grade more regularly than not, as well. Mitchell Dodds, Martin Kennedy, Aaron Woods and Leeson Ah Mau have so far had their 2nd seasons interrupted by injuries.

I would probably have Merrin and Arona very close in the mix. Arona has lost his early season form however, while Merrin seems to be getting better and better.

He had a hideous season last year, i'd be surprised if he even scored that many, i had high hopes for him, was my pick for Raiders ROTY and a vital peice to our premiership hopes. As it turned out he played like sh*t and Vidot-Croker and particularly Dugan and Carney stepped up and made us forget about him

He's since gone up to SL in QLD cup, and after a scratching start to the season has really started tearing it up now. He's on the cusp of a FG birth now.

Injuries, I believe. Only played 6 games in the NYC this year, in Round 6, 7, 8, 10, 11 and 16. In only 2 of his games has he made more than 100m. I believe he also has two average games in the NRL as well.

And you are correct, last year he was easily up there with the best. Last year he played 23 games, 8 tries, 11 linebreaks, 23 offloads, 90 tackle breaks, and averaged 14 runs for 127 metres.

Arona hasn't played in about 5 weeks. Was absolutely killing them before he got injured.

He is back this week though!

Correct, Arona has not played since Round 12. Has anyone seen his Round 8 stats? 30 runs for 255 metres, 27 tackles, 3 offloads and 6 tackle breaks.

He is a machine. If he didn't go off injured early in the SG Ball final in 2007 Penrith would have won it IMO. Was a huge loss when he went off.

This is the Second Row / Lock Forward compilation. All players must average over 80 metres a game (I know this is critical of more defensively orientated players like Jason Clark, Guy Ford and Luke Latham, but in the NRL, a good running game is required).

*all asterisk players have distorted stats due to NRL Stats failing to record the detailed statistics of the Round 4 match between Manly and Newcastle

It is interesting to see the entire Tigers backrow there. The main lock-forward contenders on that list are Baiteri, Buhrer and Hyland. Aaron Hammett (Souths) was an outstanding backrower last year who has had this season interrupted by injury, but he is still eligible for NYC, and the same goes for Kenny Edwards (Manly, now Dragons). Matt Mundine was an outstanding lock last season, but has now made a seemingly permanent move to five-eighth.

Penese has been an outstanding ballplaying forward this season so far. 6 linebreak assists and 7 try assists edges out Brad Takairangi (Souths backrower, 7 linebreak assists and 6 try assists), Troyden Watene (Cowboys backrower, 6 linebreak assists and 6 try assists) and Joel Romelo (Panthers lock, 4 linebreak assists, 6 try assists).

Matt Mundine was in a class of his own last season, however! Last season, Matt Mundine while palying mostly in the pack made 20 try assists and 20 linebreak assists. Next best ballplaying forward was Daniel Harrison (Bulldogs lock, 9 linebreak assists, 11 try assists), Tom Symonds (Roosters lock/five-eighth, 5 linebreak assists, 11 try assists), Daniel O'Regan (Warriors lock/five-eighth, 7 linebreak assists, 9 try assists), Jamie Theoharous (Panthers lock, 6 linebreak assists, 9 try assists) and Ken Edwards (Manly backrower, 10 linebreak assists, 8 try assists).

Just a quick update, I was looking over the prop analysis and it really seems to be settling out into the pools of the mid-range, and the upper class props.

The OUTSTANDING props (170-130 metres average) in the NYC are:

Trent Merrin (St George-Illawarra Dragons)
Sioisaia Vave (Gold Coast Titans)
Tinirau Arona (Penrith Panthers)
Jesse Bromwich (Melbourne Storm)

The VERY GOOD props (129-100 metres average) in the NYC are:

Shaun Spring (Gold Coast Titans)
David Hala (Brisbane Broncos)
Ronnie Alovilli (North Queensland Cowboys)
Martin Taupau (Canterbury Bulldogs)
Sam McKendry (Penrith Panthers)
Jared Warea-Hargreaves (Manly Sea Eagles)
Andrew Fifita (West Tigers)

The MID-RANGE props (99-85 metres average) in the NYC are:

Mitchel Johnson (Parramatta Eels)
Jacob Nansen (South Sydney Rabbitohs)
Matt Britt (Canberra Raiders)
Brad Lupi (South Sydney Rabbitohs)
Isaac Maliota (Sydney Roosters)
Pulou Vaituutuu (Melbourne Storm)
Mitchell Allgood (Parramatta Eels)
Josh Ailomai (Newcastle Knights)
John Viiga (Cronulla Sharks)

I am sure that Shaun Maloney (Cowboys), Aaron Woods (Tigers), Leeson Ah Mau (Warriors) and Martin Kennedy (Roosters) would all be up in the 'Very Good' to 'Outstanding' class if they were completely fit too. Illja Radan (Sea Eagles), Mitchell Dodds (Broncos) and Thomas Hancock (Dragons) have lost a lot of the form they had from last season.

No. What Hancock lost is 4 carries a game because of some changes in the game plan and the forward rotation. He's playing better than last year, improving his metres per carry and defence.

His defence has improved, yes, but you would think with Rory O'Brien being absent that Hancocks workrate would have risen.
