Back in the day weren't testimonials about collecting some money for retiring players who hadn't earnt much throughout their careers?

So in 2017 when Rugby League is fully professional and the players are handsomely compensated they are choosing to have a testimonial for 2 of the highest paid players ever who have been playing for 15 plus years?

Seems fair.

Who is it 'unfair' too?

Any money paid over the cap is by definition not available to others.

Not to mention the twisted logic of a player being somehow responsible for policing his own clubs salaries.

So he takes money under the table which he claims he thought was within a well documented salary cap and then whinges that the barrel scrapers are underpaid?

Bury your head in the sand. Captain Germ is a great player but a shit human.

The two issues aren't related in any way.

It'd be great if all clubs had players worthy of testimonials, be nice to see such games every year . . . purists would certainly encourage it

Testimonials are available to all others.

Rugby League must surely be the only world sport where fans actively campaign for players to be paid less money.

No they weren't. This was just introduced with strict guidelines that just happen to suit those 2...

Just simplify it so that anyone who has played 10 years of first grade one club can have a testy match in their 10th year.
If they are a jerk or an average player not many will turn up if they are a star and a good guy a few will.

I like the idea of rewarding the loyal. Just not Smith as he is a dog.

The other 14 clubs who don't have the luxury of their star player getting a big payout for a nothing game.

Newy would actually have to have a star in their ranks to be anywhere a testimonial game. Ponga might get there one day.......

Have to LOL at the criteria that the NRL have set.
Not only is it skewed that the highest paid players get the chance to make an extra buck, it also includes 'off field integrity issues'

So the biggest salary cap breach is not an integrity issue?
Having renos done to your house and getting $100k extra guaranteed is all good if you say 'I thought it was all above board'.

I don't begrudge players having a testimonial match, but any matches should be after they have retired and not in team colours.
Smith could get the likes of Mat Geyer, Crocker, Mat King, Adam Blair and others that he has played with over the years to play on his side.
Thurston could get Bowen, Payne, Bowman, Tamou etc.

I reckon that would be much more exciting than a trial game.
