What do we need to win a premiership?

On top of what's been said....the rub of the green. And I'm not just talking about refereeing decisions. Usually the team that wins the comp has a hell of a lot go their way. They keep key players fit, the tight games swing their way (and sometimes even the ones that aren't tight), they don't seem to have the square up effect when they run from the front....

A lot of this is sheer luck, whether we like it or not. But a lot of it comes down to confidence and game management as well, and that we can control by winning games and building confidence and experience as a side. A few additions to the roster would be nice, but any side that's capable of making the finals is capable of winning a premiership IMO. You just need more luck the further down the eight you are so it's better to have players who can control the situation and finish higher

If Baz can fluke a Marine Biology degree than anything is possible.

Agree with his point though. Most premiership winners have a bit of good fortune along the way.
I'm not casting aspersions but I do know that there was some pub in Canberra giving away a free marine biology degree when you bought your 10th Seabreeze...

The obvious one is we would like an extremely good hooker. And our forwards need a bit of an overhaul.
But, seriously, until the salary cap (and particularly the unfair TPA system) is overhauled, Parramatta won't be winning any premierships. Sad fact. However (and maybe I'm speaking from a lofty postion because I've experienced us winning four premierships already), does it really matter so much if we don't win the title? I mean, just following the team really should be enough. Sure, winning that grand final is exciting (very exciting) but some of my most memorable moments watching the Eels haven't been premiership deciders. Winning the Melbourne game in 2010. The Manly game in '81 (last game at Cumberland Oval. Lots of memories. Even this year watching Mitchell Moses slowly finding form and realising it's the first time we've had a real specialist half-back and a real specialist five-eight in the team for god knows how long. It's exciting. But if I only followed Parramatta because of the chance to win a premiership, I would have stopped watching years ago.

You aren't so lofty, merkin.

I've experienced us winning 4 championships as well.

Just to gel and a bit of luck. Current squads good enough. Maybe need more experience but pieces are there.

Our back 5 are fine. We have the likes of Hoffman and Auva'a outside the Top 17 so we've got some good depth there, as well as some real strike in Jennings, French and Guth.

Our halves have serious potential, so no problems there. A bit worried about backups but how easy is it to have a Premiership quality half sitting in reserves? Is Will Smith good enough as a backup?

I actually question our backrow. Ma'u seems to have lost his evasiveness and offloading and Edwards is just as likely to hand over the ball or territory as anything else. I think we need a hard running backrower.

Our front row is acceptable but short of a real metre eater and line bender. Will Evans fill that role? Or will we still be a bit short?

We need a hooker. A real one.

Bench depth is good but we'll be losing the likes of Pritchard and Gower. We'll still be able to field a good 17 with the likes of Vave and Matagi but we may not have the troops to call on should we end up with some injuries next year.

***

So, basically, if we are happy with Evans bulking up the front row, with Meehan coming good, then I think, in terms of the roster, we're short a hooker and a dynamic second rower. Adding these to the squad on top of what we have would also solve the depth problem.

Arthur is good enough as a coach. Our front office is no longer visible in public so that's going ok. It's just the roster.
Great answer to the question. Cheers.
