I can't believe Rochkhampton gets a game over Perth!

The Rugby League World Cup organising committee re-enforced its commitment to showcasing next year’s tournament in regional as well as metropolitan venues with today’s announcement that Rockhampton will host a World Cup match.

An enthusiastic bid from local officials saw Rockhampton edge out other regional Queenslandvenues for the right to host the tournament’s second-placed teams from Pool 2 and Pool 3 of the World Cup, on Saturday 8th November 2008.

World Cup Tournament Director and Rugby League International Federation Chairman, Mr Colin Love AM said Rockhampton’s appointment as Australia’s newest World Cup destination was part of a concerted effort to ensure supporters in regional locations had equal access to the game’s premier event as those in the big cities.

“The Rugby League World Cup is going to be a chance for everyone to get involved, and that includes regional areas, and that’s important to us,” Mr Love said today.

“We are putting a real emphasis on supporting not only major metropolitan centres but regional areas throughout the country, which will engage supporters from far and wide.

“The spirited bid from Rockhampton is testament to the local enthusiasm for the event and also the attraction of international Rugby League.

“Along with the incredible effort from various members of the Rockhampton community, the area’s local MP, the Hon. Rob Schwarten, was instrumental in securing the match for the area.”

Rockhampton Mayor Margaret Strelow said theBrownePark clash would give fans the chance to experience a world class game at a great destination.

"Our City has proven itself extremely capable of hosting large sporting events and has established itself as the sporting capital of Central Queensland,” Mayor Strelow said today.

“Rockhampton’s sunny climate supports an enviable outdoor lifestyle, and the City offers a wide range of attractions that enable the visitor to enjoy the fine weather and hospitality.

"Rockhampton is a City that has a strong following for Rugby League and the announcement of the World Cup game is another opportunity to celebrate our sporting spirit.

"I look forward, with the community of Rockhampton in welcoming the players and the game to our great City.”

The World Cup’s final European Qualifying matches will be played this November with Ireland, Lebanon and Russia (Euro Qualifying Pool 1) and Scotland and Wales (Euro Qualifying Pool 2) competing.

The runners-up in each pool will join Samoa and the USAin the repechage playoffs in mid-November to determine the final qualifier.

World champions Australia,New Zealand, England, France and Papua New Guinea automatically qualified for the 10-team tournament.

Pacific Cup group winners Tonga and runners-up Fiji have also qualified.

The World Cup commences in Australia on October 25, 2008 with the Final at Suncorp Stadium on Saturday November 22.

As soon as we lost the England game it was clear that the ARL has no interest in using the WC to develop the game. They are in it to make safe money. Nothing more. There will be no National RL in the next 20 years if things continue the way they are. the ARL/NRL is clueless about how to spread our great game. Sad but there you go.

Doubt the WARL will put up a bond for a minnows game as it would be lucky to draw 5,000 compared to the 20,000+ they could have got for the England game. Regional Q'land just about sums up the depth of vision our game has.

Rocky is the capital of central Queensland and afaik it's the only city in the region with a big enough stadium.
