St George Illawarra Dragons centre Charly Runciman will make his first appearance of the season after being named to face the Penrith Panthers at Sportingbet Stadium, Penrith on Saturday.

The St John’s Dubbo junior, who recently agreed to terms on a new two-year contract extension, is a graduate of the Dragons National Youth Competition team who fittingly made his first-grade debut against the Panthers in round 16 last season.

Runciman, 20, is part of an 18-man squad named by Head Coach Paul McGregor that also includes returning hooker Mitch Rein following his one-game suspension.

1. Adam Quinlan
2. Peter Mata’utia
3. Charly Runciman
4. Gerard Beale
5. Jason Nightingale
6. Gareth Widdop
7. Benji Marshall
8. Ben Creagh (c)
9. Mitch Rein
10. Mike Cooper
11. Leeson Ah Mau
12. Joel Thompson
13. Tyson Frizell
14. Jack de Belin
15. Will Matthews
16. Shane Pumipi
17. Bronson Harrison
18. Craig Garvey

Unavailable: Josh Dugan (NSW-State Of Origin); Dylan Farrell (Pectoral Muscle-Round 18); Dan Hunt (Groin-Under Observation); Trent Merrin (NSW-State Of Origin); Brett Morris (Shoulder-Round 21); Kyle Stanley (Hamstring-Under Observation); Jack Stockwell (Foot-Round 16); Michael Witt (Knee-To Be Confirmed).

Can't believe Harrison is back but who else is there.Would think that Garvey will play instead of Pumipi. Not too disappointed about Charly getting a go after all he is a centre & offers more in attack than Green. As already stated bench is weak.

Ok so if everyone stops having their weekly whinge at the team list, might we actually look at some of the positives to come out of this weeks team. Now for starters everyone on this forum well knows what decisions Price would have made for this weeks team so we can firstly say that the team is at least better off this week with mary at the helm.

1. Adam Quinlan
2. Peter Mata’utia
3. Charly Runciman
4. Gerard Beale
5. Jason Nightingale
6. Gareth Widdop
7. Benji Marshall
8. Ben Creagh (c)
9. Mitch Rein
10. Mike Cooper
11. Leeson Ah Mau
12. Joel Thompson
13. Tyson Frizell
14. Jack de Belin
15. Will Matthews
16. Shane Pumipi
17. Bronson Harrison
18. Craig Garvey

So from this team there are definitely positives to take from it. The introduction of this Runciman at centre is a big addition! He is young and have mountains of talent which is only going to develop over time so giving him that experience in the top grade can only benefit both himself and the club. The next decision Mary has made correct is keeping Mike Cooper at prop in the starting line up. He is easily the best performing prop so far this season, so we need to reward players such as him. Lastly is the realisation that Mitch Rein isn't an 80 minute player, so out of the two hookers we have on the extended bench we should be picking Craig Garvey. He has been showing some promise in the position and again is one of the younger players in the squad and will only develop more with experience.

But, someone here on this very forum said that Runciman is overrated. And I'm pretty sure said forumite gets good mail and is totally in the know. Didn't he, like, drop a ball or throw a bad pass or something?

Serously, terrble player. FACT.

Just a bunch of blokes playing for each other. Good to see. We've timed our run perfectly though. We'll take them!

Who are the referees more importantly? Some of the refs have crueled us at critical times too often this year and are worse when we play away from home. Just give us a fair go at the 50/50 decisions and the penalties on the fifth tackles and we may have a shot....and better discipline from our boys would help too.

It will be interesting to see how we go against them.
While they're topping the ladder they've had very close wins against middle to top tier teams, strong wins against cellar dwellers and didn't fair much better against the rabbits than we did.
As Benji & Widdop start to gel & the Price effect on the players & selection diminishes I feel the team can only get better but damn I'd feel a lot better with Dugan & Merrin in the mix

This Panthers side is made up of mostly names we'd waffle on about being average....goes to show what team spirit, self belief and sticking to an attacking game plan will do!! Having a half decent coach and refocused board will do.

Solid squad Dave.
But I am amazed they are leading the comp.
Ohh well.

Bit suprised myself TS. I've watched them a few times on the tele and what they do well is play to their strengths. They complete their sets and get to their kick. We all know Sowie has a great kicking game and this has played a part in their success. They also have good go forward and most importantly, They have desire and look like they're enjoying their footy.

Oh, And they have a good coach whom seems to be able to manage his playing group.

Have to agree, it scares me what the refs may dish out. We are not good enough to absorb poor decisions but we shouldnt have to
