I've only seen Goodall play the once, he did look pretty good as a Centre. At this stage of his career, is he any better than Vai Toutai? I don't have an opinion as I have not seen enough of him, but I'm interested to here from others who have seen a bit of him and Toutai at the same age?

IMO, Goodall is more explosive and has more pace, but they're pretty similar.

I rate Toutai, but he simply must practise his bomb catching.

A long with his positional play in attack and defence and how to put the ball down for a try.

True.

But then, he has scored some tricky tries in his short career, too.

There's plenty of upside with Toutai, but IMO his most pressing issue is his lack of confidence under the high ball.

WATMOUGH ON WAY OUT

TWO months ago this column first revealed the internal dramas that threatened to tear the Manly Sea Eagles apart.

Predictably it was met with denials.

In a couple of weeks, one of the biggest stories of the year will break — that Manly’s champion forward Anthony Watmough will not be at Brookvale next season.

I’m 99.9 per cent certain the Blues Origin star will be wearing Parramatta’s blue and gold jersey from 2015 onwards.

Assuming that rothfield is correct I think we are over capitalising in the back row. Essentially we will have Watmough, Edwards, Manu, Moeroa and Pauli in the top 25. That's assuming Gower is considered a middle forward with Paulo. It looks like an over investment in that area. We will have quality players either sitting on the bench or out of the top 17 all together especially as edge back row is an 80 minute position. At the same time we are crying out for extra quality out wide and in the halves or even up front. See the value in Watmough at the right price and for two years, no more, especially his experience although some of the money in the edge could be used better elsewhere.

Watmough is a middle forward mate, and a bloody good one at that. He has lead the Manly pack this year near by himself with one arm.

As I have said if the recruitment drive lands Watmough for 2015 than I can understand the reasonings behind the recruitment set up. I still can't see Manly paying $450,000 - $600,000 for a player they don't have on their books. Remember that they HAVE to pay $300,000 regardless of where he is. Given the apparent issues we have I can't see us paying more than $450,000 unless we are heavily back ending his deal....

If Wicks is coming as well as Watmough, it leaves a lot of our Top 25 tied up in the Pigs.

Mannah
Peats
Mossop
Watmough
Gower
Edwards
Ma'u
Moerea
Wicks (unless he is second tier)
Terepo
Lussick
Allgood
Paulo (Jnr)
Pauli
DeGois
Nelson

Probably someone I have forgotten too.

16 out of 25 is unbalanced - maybe our cap issues aren't just about the $ but also about the number of players we have in certain positions.

What is the big deal about the $300k bonus? It's the same as any other promised salary. All that is relevant is that Watmough's total promised salary for 2015 is $900k (or whatever it truly is), and that his cap value for 2015 will be $900k, either borne entirely by Manly, or across 2 clubs. The fact that $300k of the $900k comes from a deferred bonus doesn't seem to make any difference.

The best chance of this going ahead is if Watmough accepts an overall pay cut to secure his release and signs a 2 year deal with us. That could mean his 2015 cap value is less than $900k . E.g. He signs a deal with the Eels for $700k for 2015 and $450k for 2016, with Manly to eat $200k of the 2015 contract.

I could be wrong but my read on the $300k was that it was already eaten into the cap somewhere and just not paid.

Like I said, I could be wrong and probably am.

Wicks and Nelson 2nd tier.
That is only 14.

Anyway, 16 forwards would be fairly normal in top 25. Easier to slot in cheap young outside backs who make an impact. Carrying more than 2-3 backs in the top 25 would be too many.
