Recruitment Situation

I'm not sure they will register a contract for Packer based on the current direction the hierarchy is taking on image.

That is definitely a consideration but won't be resolved until someone actually tries to register his contract. My understanding is that he also faces deportation as he's served more than 12mths in jail which would also make it impossible to play NRL at all. However if the magistrate is a dragons supporter we might just get this one through lol. Could be a good signing though, we are still a couple of years off bringing through some good home grown props. Has anyone seen much of Wakeman? I hadn't noticed him much early in the year but apparently in great form recently?

Packer?s barrister, Greg James QC, took the extraordinary step of asking Judge Hoy not to count the three months Packer had already served so that Judge Hoy?s sentence did not exceed one year.
Mr James said Packer, a New Zealand international, faced almost certain deportation and visa cancellation if his jail term exceeded a year and that gaining entry to play football in Australia would be near impossible.

He is a very solid front rower.
He was a stand out all through juniors and hasn't kicked like everyone thought he would.
It looks like he might be coming into his own now.
I got some mail about 8 weeks ago he was being considered close to a start but it was a dud call as he is not signed for the Dragons.
He may figure next year?

What do we think of Russell Packer? Will be released from jail 5th Jan 2015. Most likely will go to the Penny's having been previously coached by Cleary and also Gould has visited him in jail. Bennett is keen to take him to the Bronco's as well, however I don't believe those clubs will offer him a big contract and maybe we can still snag him paying unders. Thoughts?

can he play wing?
because i heard we might need a winger soon....

First of all, I come in peace and I'm not trying to have a go at the club but unless you guys sign some front rowers, your going to really struggle next season. I don't think Willie Mason would be a bad signing; he's still playing relatively good football and wouldn't cost a thing. In saying that, I can understand why many Dragons supporters would be apprehensive in signing him; he is not getting any younger and is not really a long term solution. I think what you guys need is a superstar prop. Why not look to England and sign Chris Hill? He plays for Warrington and from what I've seen looks like a really good player! He's an English international and has won Warrington's player of the year award along with being named in the English Super Leauge Dream Team of the Year!

Yep, ESL is where we will find our props. One youngish pom who is wanting to prove himself in the NRL and perhaps the other an expat wanting to come home on the cheap.

He's going to be bawling non-stop through this off season. We're going to be signing some appalling rubbish.

Rumour has Packer in the frame again.
What do you think?
I like the idea. Hard man, which we need. Big unit that can charge it forward, which we need.
Will hopefully come back with something to prove and some fire in the belly.
I know it will upset some who don't want to see us associated with someone with his history, but we are beyond being delicate about these things.
We need a hard head in the pack, preferably two.

I, too, am keen to hear Dr Fruitbaskets thoughts on signing Packer...

I would take him for sure, made a bad mistake but he is not the only bad boy running around. I just want him to play football not marry my sister.

Imagine the sight of P Doust tip toeing out to Lithgow prison to see Packer .
Would be rare as Dousty is relatively settled in his bullet / bomb proof bunker at Dragons Leagues away from his adoring followers :D
