THE black dog of depression has claimed another big-name NRL star, with Cronulla, NSW and Australian frontrower Andrew Fifita recently checking into an eastern suburbs rehabilitation centre.Sport Confidential has been told Fifita initially checked into a Shire-based facility after an incident on his brother David’s buck’s party in Brisbane last month, before later being transferred to an eastern suburbs clinic.
A 116kg wrecking ball when fully focused on the field, the Kangaroos and NSW Origin frontrower has long been struggling with a number of inner demons.
As far back as the Kangaroos World Cup campaign in the UK last year, there was an incident involving the local authorities which the Australian team management did well to contain.
A hotel room in Manchester was damaged and the Australian frontrower was issued with a fine and forced to pay for the damages.
Alcohol is part of the issue, with Fifita occasionally losing control of his actions when he chooses to drink to excess.
Interestingly, Fifita was also a late withdrawal from an Auckland Nines promotion in Sydney 12 days ago.
This is when the frontrower is believed to have entered into a specialist facility. As part of his rehabilitation, the Sharks forward has been given permission to attend his brother David’s wedding in Thailand later this month.
Fifita’s management refused to comment but said he was no longer in the rehabilitation clinic.

If he is crook I hope he gets better soon - I really do..... ( I live with depression in my family - it is hard)

but ...

If it is a cover up for some recent bad behaviour ... I hope we have learned well from the big boys.

You only have to look at half the posters in here.... I think with the season and the crap we all sat through - we might need a spell in a Benny Barba Wellbeing Clinic.

Good on the big fella, whatever his problems may be, the bottom line is he is seeking help. A lot of kids out there look up to these guys and a lot of kids out there are suffering silently with their own problems. Someone like Andrew seeking help could hopefully encourage others out there to seek help.

I won't hold my breathe, but I do hope the media play this out positively for once.

cronullafied.

Yeh it must be bloody hard the thought of earning $600k + per year.

I know depression is a horrible thing but is that the problem or is it a smokescreen for a lack of professionalism (of our club)?

Some of these footballers with "depression" wouldn't know what it's like to really struggle through life.

I know a couple of people who've suffered depression.

None of them have ever trashed a hotel room.

Or have alcoholic incidents hushed up.

I don't apologise for my scepticism.

Darius looked and sounded pretty bloody happy in his holiday snaps and interviews from Shangri-la.

Isn't he in rehab for trashing a hotel or something?

Can they take calls?..... Post the number. Happy to ring.

PM it if you like.

Purely from a spectator's point of view he appeared not to have his mind on the job / game fro just about the whole season. I thought he might have been preoccupied with bean counting or thinking about the 2nd McMansion, but it may not be the case at all.

Give the bloke a fair chance.

Despite the anecdotal evidence you use to support your argument being weak, I'd almost suggest that media reports of 'depression' are usually other mental illnesses.

Mental Health is a really complex and confusing topic, yet the media seems to report anyone suffering one as 'depression'.
