What players can earn outside the salary cap:

Unlimited - Players can earn unlimited amounts from corporate sponsors who are not associated with the club and who do not use the game's intellectual property (no club logos, jerseys or emblems) provided these are pre-approved. These agreements may not be negotiated by the club as an incentive for a player to sign a contract, nor can they be guaranteed by the club.

The 3rd party system is the death of the salary cap by stealth.
Open slather now ladies and gents.
No limits.

as mentioned in the previous post it's unlimited but can't be club organized and can't be a club sponsor. Otherwise Broncos, Souths and Roosters buy whoever they darn well please and compete with only each other for top talent.

Nothing new here, the salary cap has always been a total farce....
If anything the system further advantages strong clubs like the Roosters, Broncos and Souths over clubs who don't have links to big business.

If anything the Storm are the big losers, but that is probably Karma for perfecting the wrestle, having Billy Slatter and being based in a city so boring that large crowds turn out to watch AFL.

Are you sure about that, and I c true there would have to be some sort of limit applied.
Yeah I'm sure... I personally know people who are involved with 2 of the Warriors sponsors and they have had big TPA's with certain players over the years.

How it was explained to me, there's no limit on the amount and it's not counted against the cap. But there ARE limits to the number of players that each club sponsor has TPA's with once they go over a certain amount.

There are also limits on the number of TPA's a company has with clients of a single management company. Which is one of the reasons why the registration and accreditation of player managers was pushed...

How are the Storm the losers here??? I'm pretty sure Billy Slaters TPA with Australian Banana's is one of the biggest out there...

I say the Storm are big losers because they got caught cheating the cap and were stripped of titles.

I also think their payments were probably defensive in nature, trying to keep players they developed rather than trying to poach players from other clubs.

But they should have stuck the the rules.

In the case the rules are wrong, but the clubs should get the NRL to sort it out or just cop it.

I am not sure how to fix it, probably just forget about a salary cap altogether.

Anyway, it is way of topic.

As opposed to just competing between themselves and Bulldogs?!

or perhaps large numbers of people go and watch AFL games because the game had been established for near on a century, in the city where it originated from, before the same city got a rugby league team.

The salary cap was implemented so all clubs were financially equal so they all could compete on a level playing field, with TPA'S this has all gone out the window and this is why basically the same four or five teams are up near the top every year. TPA'S and salary cap cheating will destroy the game.

TPA's are fine... The NRL should never be allowed to limit what a player can earn for endorsements....

To cap someone's personal earnings outside of what they earn from there club is draconian and completely unfair.

People have this false idea that the salary cap was brought in to even up the competition. While that is a by product of the cap, that's not why it was imposed.

It was imposed in its current state as a hard cap to prevent the clubs from overspending and going belly up.

TPA's are supposed to be an agreement between the player and the company, so the club SHOULDN'T be effected financially by these deals at all...

Well said, if the club I support is playing like chumps I blame the players and coach, if the club I support doesn't have the personnel to compete on the field I then blame management. It's not the NRLs job to keep all teams competitive. If your club sucks right now it's not because the world is unfair it's because your team and it's management aren't doing the right things on and off the field. I wish the Warriors could buy themselves a premiership but all they do is go around in circles, I admire clubs like Souths, Dogs, Broncos etc. A whole lot of hard work has gone into getting those clubs into the position they are in at the moment. The Warriors should really be on the same level as the elite clubs no excuses.

I was only partly joking.

I've played AFL it is a OK game to play.

I've been to watch it twice and on both occasions I found it extremely boring, so boring I wondered why anyone ever went to watch it ... but it is probably just personal taste.

Being established in a city for 100 years does not necessarily make it an attractive game to watch..... the Edinburgh tattoo is long established .... I also find it boring .. but you probably like it.
